Post 7

This country is where I live, it's the lifestyle I know.

I wouldn't be behind my leaders if I felt they were doing the wrong thing, thats why we elect the ones we think will do the right things.

Am I partiotic? what is patriotic? I do love my country but I'll question it too :)

Post 8

Or maybe we elect the ones we think would do the least wrong things?

Post 9

John Howards gay... But I love Australia.. Americans are too..... meh...Poms are.... meh.... aussie rock!

Post 10

 i like Australia and its one of the few places in the world I would like to live ...

but the word patriotic bring to mind all the weirdos ... especially the ones from America ... so i do not like to use the word patriotic.

Post 11

PHEN, i will lose all respect for you. John Howard rox. He has got us out of recesion, lowered the unemployment, and made money for aust.
No prime minister is perfect but old johny is doing the best he can and loves australia. For you people who hate him, find another who has done as good, in past or present.
Cant fine one can you!!!
I hate politicians but johny is ok in my books.

Post 12

fact of the matter is, we cant have everything we want. So johny cant give it all to us, but the opposition will do their damn best to emphasise what they havent done. I like johny, he knows what he wants and he goes for it. to me thats a better leadership than someone who will piss fart around changing their mind on what they want everyday.

I dont know if i would call myself patriotic. I love my country, but i dont go around shouting it around the streets. I think it should be illegal for anyone to burn the australian flag. It is a reprosentation of the whole country and its people. you could probably say that is patriotic. I wouldnt die for my country unless i felt it was absolutly necessary. ie: i wouldnt go fight in a war to reprosent my country. But if we were being invaded, i would take up arms.

well i guess i am sorta patriotic

Post 13

I have to agree with Apophis as he agreed with old johnny hehe
Anyone who burns the australian flag should be burnt themselves. Im dead serious, its a symbol of our country. Nothing is perfect but if you think u can go somewhere else and get better, goodbye. Burning the flag does nothing to help and is, sadly to say, unaustralian hehe
It should be made illegal.
Yes i too would go to arms in australias defence. Cant hold the diggers down when you need us.

Post 14

Walking around the streets shouting out 'IM AUSTRALIAN!!' isn't patriotic. it's just weird.

Basically, if it pisses you off when people put down australia, (eg, 'what has australia ever done!?'), then you're a patriot.

I think I have to agree with you on your second paragraph. I think what makes our style of partroism special is that it isn't the "In you face Americain" that we get from the Americain media and hollywood, but more of a deep seated reserved feeling.

As for our PM I can't say I agree with him on everything but at the moment there isn't a viable alternative to vote for. For me Mr. Howard doesn't project the image of a statesman the Mr. Keating did. Maybe if Premier Carr moved to Federal Politics I would vote for him as a alternative, but that is another matter altogether.

lowered the unemployment

this is a lie. lol, unemployment went down because those that were once considered unemplyed, were suddenly just not counted at all towards the labour force.

but besides that, i agree. John Howard ain't too bad... 'cept for the gun laws.

i consider myself reasonably 'patriotic' not that i would follow Australia in 'whatever' they do but generally speaking...

I love Australia but I wouldn't call myself patriotic because I like to think that people could live all the narrow-minded nationalism that causes so many problems in the world today. I don't mean not loving your country, I'm all for that (w00t for teh wallabies!!!) but I mean like those crazy super dooper crazy Americans that don't care about anyone else. But yeah if some mofo's tryed to threaten good old Aus for no reason I'd be obliged to open up a can of woopass 8) What's wierd is becuase I was born in America, moved here when I was 1 year old and became an Australian citizen, i can technically be drafted into the US Army - which sucks some major balls :( Anyway back on topic, Hooray for Canada... erm Australia! :D

lol, yeah i'm patriotic to both Australia and America. Not a die hard loyalist, but a strong believer. It was pretty funny because when we were living in the states, because waht i thought made and Australian patriotic was having pies and wearing thongs and driving wanker utes. But my views sure have changed. However i still rekon Canada are a bunch of dumb dumb heads

Post 25

i'm not patriotic. i am australian, but there's no way in hell i'd ever go to war for anyone. if johnny wants me to fight his war, he'd have to be slinging a gun and slogging through the muck next to me on the front lines. notice that the rich people rarely if ever have to go to war?

Post 26

Yeah thats because they aren't in the army... der :P

Post 27

um, i love australia, i think its a great place to be and would fight for it, so long as i didnt have people throwing stuff at me, then its every man (or woman) for themselves and i'd be a patriot for m'self...

Australia is the best country in the world, elsewhere is just sh*t.

And I agree with past sentiments, Jonny howard is ok, untill he bends over to suck bush's ****.

I believe that the ABS now publishes an adjusted time series back to the early 80s. These are the figures used when boasting about "lowest unemployment".

Just be prepared to renounce your US citizenship when the time comes.

Conscription is a barbaric practise. I continue to be amazed that the US ever did it, and still can.

Australias a good country - no other place id rather be.

Post 31

canada :P

and conscription was practised here in australia too...

Post 32

?during the first world war
and definitely when the Vietnam war was happening

i don't think conscoption is a bad thing, as long as you are only called on to defend your country (a very patriotic thing to do  )

Post 33

patriotism I think it summed up by JFK's famous words in his inaugural speech..

-------------------
Ask not what your country can do for you. But what you can do for your country.

Would anyone practice such words?

Do you think US would ever win against both Germans and Japan without going to such length? Australia might be flying the "rising sun" by now if they didn't do it.

And let's face it, Australians (without American support) vs Japanese during World War2. Japanese would win easily. And no you can't expect great help from the British when they are busy figthing for the motherland.

Post 36

invading a country is far harder than it seems. you need to get your troops over here, set up bases of operation, feed you men, all whilst fighting the enemy. not only that, but to properly 'invade' a country you'd need to set up a relatively permanent system, and during wartime this is a huge drain on resources. ask yourself why america pulled out of vietnam. why did france leave vietnam?
how much manpower would it take to invade australia? our army's pretty pissweak, but we do have one thing: space. to conquer australia they'd need to get their troops here, and even if the 'brisbane line' was enacted, they'd still need to get down to the southeast in order to finish everything off. a bit of a waste really. the fuel costs would be awesome, they'd need to get a fairly decent force here to maintain superiority, not to mention air cover, setting up airbases, somewhere to land ships to maintain supplies, because let's face it, they aren't bringing tanks in from the air. the list goes on and on. frankly i don't think Japan ever intended to invade Australia, although this is my personal opinion based on what i've learned from history.

as for patriotism: if the government isn't in it for the people, they can shove it sideways. historically aristocrats have always been the officers, whilst the plebs do the bleeding and screaming. i don't play that game. and i agree with the pres... conscription is barbaric :)

Post 37

Well surprisingly enough, Illusions has layed out as well as could be done. The Japanese could have stormed Darwin with a cruiser's landing party, trained to daly waters and captured that airfield, and then dominated by air the whole of northern Australia outside of Brisbane.

Why they chose not to do so can be speculated at, but I suspect they did the figures - gain vs cost - and decided it just wasn't worth the bother. They would create an enormously long and highly vulnerable supply line, and there'd be no loot to pay for it.

Australian defence policy, until recently, has been about "Unacceptable Attritition", the idea that you make it nuts to invade. One does this by using the enormous sea gap Australia enjoys by deploying air power along the northern fringe. This has been done.

You also develop a light, mobile groundforce capable of fighting in small, quasi-guerilla units. This has also been done by Australia's army. We learnt to fight dirty in the Malayan conflict, and we proved our adeptness with tropical warfare in Vietnam, where unlike the Americans our forces performed well. The idea is: Australia is empty and there's not much to defend. Draw the enemy out and suck them dry. These tactics defeated Napoleon's 600,000 man Grand Armee in Russia (as did weather unkind to soldiers and machines - also a feature of Australia's north); it's very likely that it could do so again.

In truth, if we stick with the gap/attrition strategy, Australia is for all intents and purposes pointless to invade. The only country right now that could plausibly try is the United States, in about 30-40 years China will probably be able to. For pretty much this reason, Australia retains a 6-month development lead time for nuclear weapons against the eventuality of a superpower losing its marbles.

Apart from the Swiss, who are armed, bunkered and fortified to the teeth, Australia is probably the least attackable country on earth in pure military terms. Our relationship with the US, while it would be handy in staving off attacks by heavy marine, armour and air, would not be a live-or-die relationship.

Indeed the main US contribution to Australia's defence in the second world war was war-capital: ships, planes and guns, and the men to operate them. They could have just sent the capital, but they saw Australia as a useful base to work on the Japanese. Had Port Moresby or Singapore been available, they would have surely passed Australia by.

None of which changes what I said: conscription is a barbaric practice. No man should be compelled to fight and kill for any reason. If a war is just and necessary to defend a man's country, he will naturally take to arms and fight to repulse invaders. But he will have chosen to do so, rather than to fight a war which may be none of his business.

He did fuck all in terms of helping our economy. He was lucky to have been able to be elected while our economy was going strong, and as for making money for Australia? Sure. While our overseas debt keeps increasing...

As for patriotism, I like this country, but not the people who run it.
