Should the U.S. establish a permanent, manned base on the moon?

23 thousand votes have been made and it's 50/50. I for one cannot understand why 11.5 thousand people would be opposed to such an endevour, if their tax payers money isn't spent on that it'll be spent on something twice as stupid. To the moon, I say!

Make your vote guys!

All up for setting up a base on the moon, but it shouldnt be just the US. Like eveeryone do it together. Sorta like the international space station. I.e Aussies, Chinese, Japanese, Russians, Brits etc

that is the stupidest thing i have ever heard.... well no its not, but its kinda stoopid.... and what would they do up there?... heard space cows?.... what could taxpayer money go on you ask?... poverty stricken neighbourhoods, sobering up programs, reserach on ways to help people not be addicted to anything, giving kids a place to live instead of the street, donations to worthy charitys, helping fond the cure for aids, cancer... any one of a million diseases.... mmmhmmm.... a little house on the moon is so very important :s

Post 9

Its a start towards living on other places and will most likely be a cause for a lot of new technologies and will also be a boost towards improving space flight.

So its not really stupid. They could give all their money to the poor or whatever, but whats the use of helping all the poor people if by the time we manage to get rid of poverty on the earth, the planet is already fucked over and most living things on it are going to die, All because we didn't spend money in the past into space research and now we don't have the tech to plan a mass evacuation or whatever of humans.

Just a thought. Also i doupt that if they didn't spend the money on the moon thing, that they will give it to some kind of charity.

Post 10

That is the gayest idea I've ever heard of. What a waiste of money

Post 11

From the perspective from an engineering. It's a pretty good idea. Right now technology with the lack of World Wars is let us say it, becoming stagnant. Okay yes there are computers which are getting improved on because of us gamers :P

It will give a huge push to technology just to even start planning out to get there..

If we don't start now and follow the excuses that there homeless, there's diseases and people are dying. We will never get anywhere.

By the time we're on standing on Mars - there'll still be homeless, diseases and people dying.

Heck getting to space could even bring us closer to solving those problems. Got space research? You'd be amazed what can be done in space that can't be done here.

or.. we could have a moon base!!!!

Post 13

make moon pie! and drink moonshine

Post 14

I think we have had this discussion before. I am getting a sense of deja vu. Anyone else?

Post 15

if you mooned (showed your ass!) to someone on the moon.. would you be earthing them?

How ever cruel it may be.. people need to die. World is going to be grossly over populated in the future and wont be able to sustain itself. But the anwer to that will be just another extinction and the process will start all over again... Go the circle of life

Post 17

i'm going to apply for a job as the doorman on the moonbase (the inner airlock doorman)

just so i can say.. (in my best Dr. Evil voice...)

'Welcome to my moonbase'

considering the amount of money the US has pissed up against the wall in iraq one can hardly go around harping about a waste of money. the global military budget is fucking obscene - you want to complain about helping the poor? take the money from the guns and bombs kitty first.

a moon base would be an excellent step forward both for space research and also to begin implementing practical endeavours - interstellar missions, asteroid mining, moon mining, rail gun usage, scanning for near earth asteroids, growing silicon or whatever - all of these things are made far more do-able because of the moons lower gravity and lack of atmosphere. as soon as we are set up there then we can start doing some extremely cool things we are unable to do here on earth. once the initial (admittedly high) installation costs are met you will soon cover it both in real $ and scientific discovery terms.

what we REALLY need is a space elevator. soon as we have one of these babys operational then space mining is possible and sitting just outside Mars is billions of rocks containing iron and nickel and possibly valuable minerals. pick em up, pillage them and send the good stuff on down. the amount of potential wealth to be had is so enormous everyone on the planet could afford to live a nice life (unless the corporate whores get a hold of it and keep all the profits for the shareholders, which they probably will unless its financed by a global government initiative)

moon station = the first step to colonising outer space = progress

its evolution baby!

Post 19

Should they come up with a cost effective returning reusable vehicle first?

Only needs to get to the Space station, then you can have your station to moon shuttle craft.

As its alot harder to leave the earth than to get from the spacestation to the Moon with the Gavity And the return trip re-entry.

Man needs the Earth to Space Station Vechile before he (as in the non-sexual he) bothers to have a moonbase, then after the moon, he needs a station around Mars a Station to Station Shuttle and a Station to Mars Reuseable vechile, this is the Hardest vechile cause to start with it's gotta go down with the fuel to get back, where as the Earth Vechile goes down empty (of fuel) the Mars Vechile would go down full (and very much more endanger of going Kaboom).

i actually wasnt saying anything about people dying really.... i think death (its function anyways) is a good thing.... but i mean, what i was saying is that there are so many probs here, why go and screw up another planet? i dont think the moon should be lived on anywho. maybe a small thing would be okay, but on the whole, the moon should be left as is.

The moon isn't a planet.
/Smart arse

The moon is a resource and will be used eventually, just like Antartica will be eventually mined. (Not that I would like to see it happen)

Water has been discovered on the moon and NASA geologist have worked out an easy way to get O2 from moon rock using a solar funance.

So there is plentiful oxygen and hydrogen. All that need to happen is the massive capital outlay for some light industry/manufacturing on the moon and near earth orbit for the benefit to come to all. If governments won't do it, eventually it will be economic for the corparations to go there, which would be the bigger shame.

About the amount of money spent on the military, I would love to see a statistic on the amount spent on welfare... I am sure it would be higher

Post 22

well i do know that the budget that the USA has on their milliatary is like twice what Australias entire economy is

Post 23

Do it, many of the problems here are direct or indirect results of overpopulation.

We extend what we are capable of as a race, and we shall benefit. As a race, we will have to leave this planet someday or perish. Let us take the steps now.

I disagree with it being a US controlled base, but it is still progress. As long as no one human organisation, be it government or corporate, controls space the benefits will be tangible (more true with corporations, the free market dynamic will prevent any one of them from abusing power).

Cooperation is well and good but the more countries are involved, less chance it will happen as more people will be involved with the decision process.

If 1 country decided to do it, then other countries won't have "veto power" on the plans.

k... now just adding up the billions for the 'protecting our homeland' section (not including the defence section or the millions.... just adding billion dollar amounts) i ended up with a number i cant even figure out how to pronounce..... if the other welfare areas come up to even that basic amount well then fine... but for famine its only 200 million.... thats a pittance compared to some stuff they feel is 'vital' ppfft....

if im prooven wrong, then fine. but this is what i read on the first few pages.... my 56k is too slow to download it all... im too impatient.

It's pretty much only the third world that is increasing in population due to natural increase. The fertility rates across most of the western world has dropped to almost 1.00 (meaning that 1 person is born for every person who dies) and in a few cases in Europe, it has dropped below 1. It is only the third world which is over-populated and that could be helped too if any of the western governments cared enough to give them a hand. I did a research paper on this for economics about 6 months ago :D
