Im loooking to buy a new video card for evo4 and i have about $200 to $250 to spend (mabye abit more). I was wondering what is the best card i can get and where from?

I don't know where you got your prices from, but 9600XT you can get for around $270 8) Best price for performance by far.
Oh and don't buy a 256MB model, most of them run much slower and by the time any game requires 256mb video cards this thing will be long gone. If it were a 9800 then 256MB would probably be worth forking out for.

try www.acetechcomputers.com.au for the GeXcube 9600XT 128mb. doesn't come with HL2 but the saving over the Sapphire could buy you HL2 ;)

a 9600SE is worse than a 9600.
a 9600XT can be found for about $275 from Acetech as of the 15th. (mailing list)
btw, i have a 128mb Radeon 9800Pro. 128 mb is all you will need unless you feel like playing games at 1600x1200 with 6xAA. (that is the only time i've run out of video memory - Max Payne 2.)

but yeah...first off mojo, what video card do you have right now???
if it just specifically for evo you can get away with most cards. even a gf4
my advice for the long term is to wait
i don't think there's any real point in buying a 9600 pro at this current moment.
in three months time, it will be obsolete...ie doom 3 and half life 2 comes out, not to mention some other sexy dx9 titles
i've seen the benchines with a 9600pro vs 9800pro and there is a BIG difference.
hold out if you can and 9800 pro might drop at that time. ati is also planning to release their new next gen card around that time that runs on pci express, which might also be a factor in dropping prices...

the 256mb version is cheaper i've just been told. (friend just ordered one...)
i hate the idea of waiting for things to drop in price - you do that and you will be forever waiting for the last big thing todrop in price :|

either its buy a 9800 pro now..if you got the dosh (which mojo don't seem to have at the moment), or wait when you need one at the time, which in that time i guarantee... 9800 pro prices will drop

funny. it's actually like comparing a panasonic to a sony.
GeXcube/GeCube HAS to be built with EXACTLY the same specs as EVERY other brand. some brands add in extras like a different coloured PCB (ooh yay) others (like hercules) have the whole modded feel to them. and GeXcube offers a greater warranty than that of Sapphire. (btw i have a sapphire card and a GeXcube card they are identical to the ATi reference boards.)

Panasonic being one of the best electronics brands on the market today... palsonic being a cheap chinese knock-off. Panasonic outselling Sony in recent times...
I could have added something else in there.. hmmm let's see.. how about LG compared to Sony (same tube types for TV's etc etc parts for DVD's are almost identical). Or really ANY other brand that isn't Sony because sony's prices are the added premium of having the Sony label?

i know there is a difference between those two brands but did it really matter which i used for comparison... i was trying to compare a well known brand with a lesser known brand (one extreme to the other) to get across my point of price differences..
and before you start bitching again, i'm not saying GeXcube isn't well known.

price drops are unpredictable, talk to p-air after he returns and he may be able to let you know.. plus it all depends when ATi/NVidia release their new cards.

no way it will go in the high 200 price range, not in that short time
ati i predict will also follow suite by releasing a budget conscious pci express card which will be slightly lower perfomance than 9800 pro aimed at the mainstreamers.

more than likely. if companies discontinue the 9800 series prices will stall and not go down (ala GF4Ti4600's). For MoJo's sake, i hope this doesn't happen. The 9600XT and 9800XT should be around for a little longer than the Pro cards anyway... and no doubt the XT's will drop in price also.
i believe they are bringing out the more mainstream card later on... around mid 2004.
