Argueably alcohol is a much more dangerous drug yet surprisingly LEGAL! ..... One day the world will wake up to its own stupidity. Alcohol is an aggressive drug that causes brain damage and liver problems.
Weed does cause a few brain probs as well ..... but not as severe as alcohol when drunk to the extent! Plus pot smokers just sit on the couch watching teletubbies .... instead of starting pub brawls!

Saw a doco on kids sniffing petrol up north of WA
These kids were absolutely wrecked and most were about 10 and younger ...
Showed this old fella with a jerry can in the back of his car selling it to the kids ..... they had small botles and cans and just sat around with them stuck to their noses ....
So sad to watch ... had a tear in my eye ...

petrol sniffig is really really bad actually. something that isnt in the public light anywhere near as much as it should be. it ruins peoples lives. i have heard of cases where a whole family is effected. right down to the 2 year old children who are having petrol soaked rags pushed into their faces by their 8 yr old siblings so the baby will stop crying for food because they are so hungry ( the chemicals stop hunger pangs)

I do not beleive it is the government's job to fix human stupidity.
Nor do I see how they have the power to affect that behavior. The best we could try and do is educate them but I have doubts as to the effectiveness of that.

it's the point of the government to fix the place we live in. Make it better. This includes preventing petrol sniffing. I'm a firm believer of preventing something so if the government could have stopped this by changing the fuel (though I really have no idea what fuel your talking about Lilu) then they bloody well should have asap.
I really wish they do something more constructive with the police force then having them try to stop the pot trafficking through darwin.. I mean seriously this 5 yr old smoking pot is just going to spark a whole lot of negative media for pot which is exactly what clare martin probably wants. The police could use thier time more efficiantly such as solving the problems of 10 yr old street gangs and the currently out of hand sexual assault cases that have popped up recantly.
So a five year old smoking pot.. yes its bad. Yes the parents are not fit parents. And yes the kid should be taken away. However I think it's being overplayed.. I think the petrol sniffing is definately more important then a five year old smoking weed.
I think the government in darwin needs to stop focusing on the medias attention and start focusing on the people.

also, yay for me the queen of over generalisation... i said the govt because they have the dosh that controls what kind of services remote communities get, helping services ect.... which at the moment is nothing.

Lilu, I have experienced third rate environments. Lived in many - seen lots of horrible shit that people do to others and themselves before I was 10.
There isn't a 'fuel' for cars which is currently viable and widespread enough to use anywhere - let alone rural areas where the need for a high energy capacity fuel is much higher than that of urban areas. There is probably only one alternative:
Hydrogen - All you need is distilled water and solar panels/source of elec. Ethanol is another option... except that it would add to the already horrendous alcoholism in the areas we're talking about here.
There is no way the problem will go away until all the CxHy/Petrol in the world is gone. Same with alcohol or smoking etc.
The Govt. isn't going to do jack either as: 1. it doesn't have the money or power to change the way large car manufacturers create their engines (in order to use said alternative) because 2. it gets a lot of tax money from the sale of those cars. And then there's fuel tax to consider... God I'm ranting now.

Yes, sniffing and chroming, and alcoholism are all bad,but the people responsible for these communities (Tribal Leaders and Elders) have to show some leadership in tackling the problem.
As it is right now things are looking pretty bleak for the blacks in northern australia, with the likely break up of ATSIC and a few other smaller organisations

ATSIC doesn't do anything anyway. That's another problem that so many Aboriginal communities face - they don't have a representative council that is:
1. Representative.. :\
2. Really cares for what is happening.
3. Is willing to do something about it.
That was a major gripe amongst full-blood aboriginal communities in East Arnhem - they don't get any funding or support yet they do pretty well for themselves, all things considered. Whereas some other aboriginal communities tend to get free hand outs but don't make use of it. It's a terrible way to run things....

We're talking billions and billions of dollars to get a new viable fuel source. Car companies won't allow it, gov looses too much money on tax. Carbon fuels is what makes the world go round atm.
