-do cs player`s just get old and die out? or is there anew game around?
I have been having ago at cs cz ( I like) and unreal 2004 which i`m afraid i don`t like
and I do like 1942 DC and don`t like BF Vietnam. yelling in my air from 50 vietcong is abit much.
Driving car games maybe fun but just crashing and not really a good interactive feel good game. Too close to my driving in melbourne.
Myst and the like are abit slow for me - call me old fashioned but if you can`t shoot them wheres the fun!
By all accounts peoples taste change and nothing lasts forever. hmm I have an idea maybe we should cancel all games and just have a forum where we can chat about things of interest and see what happens.
The other option is work out what games old cs players like to have ago at and trial them see if they get played -such as quake and afew mods like chaos and deathmatch as well as ctf. NOW THATS FUN.
Do cs players fade away into the dim light of time?

Steam certainly got rid of a few people. Give me a yell when it's working => 98% - I just reformatted and haven't installed too many games though. I have installed Steam just last night... and I couldn't login to the Friends Server.
I enjoy many a game. I'm only 17 (turning 18 soon :P noone forget it!). Max Payne 2 is a big favourite, NFS: Underground (I do enjoy driving games. Heck, I use to play Formula 1 games, 50 laps and everything). I was a big fan of DC and BF1942 but that's kind of warn off, maybe because I never really got good at it.
While I do enjoy Counter-Strike, and I like 1.6 and I like the concept of Steam (to be able to get all your updates easy, see when friends are online, see servers like SQ or the likes...) I don't enjoy seeing errors.
Customisation plays a big part in games nowadays I think as well. Being able to WANDER around in big worlds is lots of fun, building up a car etc. Heck, in one of these Tony Hawk games, you can even upload your own face.
Youth like things like this, it appeals to us. Else we just like to pretend we are some badarse skater :P
There's just too many newer games coming out, great graphics etc. Max Payne 2 is focused purely on Single Player, which is where I play my games now. I do have high speed internet connection still, but I am just sick of the online environment and/or haven't found the right game yet. (Because I use to enjoy joining a server that I played on CS, seeing people I knew there and having a great 'over-the-mic' chat whilst playing - all the better if I was winning :P)

I agree, STEAM killed CS for me in a big way, or more specifically, the 1.6 version of CS. Its just not the same and feels too flakey.
I have found the magical world of MMORPG's, and im not turning back ;)

Been playing cs since Beta 5, or just over 4 years now (and yea still suck I know :P). I love the game a lot, and is still my favourite game to play. I still enjoy other games like UT2004, dc, etc but they don't really grab me like cs does.
Personally I think there are many reasons why a lot of the older gen cs players have gone, and I don't think "steam" is anything to blame. It's the amount of assholes in this game now that really ruins it, so much abuse, swearing, team killing, team flashing, blocking, you name it, it's all there. I can't go a day without playing cs anywhere without seeing some form of verbal abuse.
Say there's a new dude on the T team and he has bomb, but is unsure how to plant it (and I know we've ALL been there at some stage) so he doesn't realise he needs to plant, etc and T's loose the round via timeout or smething. The poor fella will cop so much crap its sickening. It's abuse like this that has gone through the years and gets worse and worse and worse. It's not very encouraging for new players, and I know personally it's really starting to get to me.
Generally you won't find too many nice players these days, sure they are around, but the amount of assholes > nice players. Public play isn't fun anymore, wars are and generally where you find your older gen of players.
There are many reasons cs is dieing, slowly, its been around for over 4 and a half years now, that itself is certainly impressive for any game to last so long.
To me cs is almost a perfect game, sure it might not have your eye candy or audio effects, but that's the least of things required to a great game. As long as cs keeps up, you'll probably find me somewhere with it :)

"DEATH TO CS"
Post 6
I say no more.
Post 7
Nice point Jono. Also, all these 'been playing for 6 months and i think im so so leet now' noobs see all these 'older gen' in a good clan, where you will no doubt find them at the top. The older gen are friendly to everyone, because like SB and dX, they aren't in there just because of skills.
So now these other noobs are forming clans every other day. Keep them for a week and then start another one. That spoils it too. People can't help themselves when (in Jono's example) telling the guy who can't plant the bomb to type 'gg bomb' in the console. Heck, this person probably doesn't know what a console is!
But there's another thing I have to add to that Jono - they should've played the tutorial a couple of times :)

I played CS competitively for close to three years, but haven't played on that level in over 18 months now. It really has died for me, and it had nothing to do with Steam or 1.6 specifically, as I was already drifting away before they came to be.
Post 9
CS died for me once it hit 1.6, as much as i dislike Steam, that wasn't what ruined it. Similar with what Jono said, the influx of idiots into servers made the game uninteresting.
CS will be my favourite game of all time, due mainly to how easy it is, you can jump in a server, lost 50 maps, and come back a dominate. Every map is different, and because it's such a quick and dynamic game, it's twice an enjoyable. Nothing is more fun than a full server of the old GU/Octa4 folk.
Saying that though, i bought UT2k4 just over an hour ago, so if someone would like to message me, lets go to the servers :)

CS .. lets see,
Im like jono just more competitive .. No matter what game I play, I usally have more fun when winning, hence I took on cs just over 5yrs ago. And have been getting better and better at it.
I am now seeing that I am good at it. Its kinda funny, this community not more then 6-12mnths ago used to be Active CS. Since Steam (blaming point for most) has come around, people say right steam thats it I quit.
But the thing that gets me is all the later games, HL2 CS2 etc etc are gonna be played on Steam, which throws me.
Many people install steam, hit a error of some sort, then say right shitty program what a load of crap etc etc .. But never seem to take the 2 mins to look up why that happened.
I guess my point is that if more people payed attention to the smaller things like there are people around that know how to fix alot of problems related to steam or visited there forums and did the 5mins searching, then I think alot of those that used to play CS but blame it on steam for stopping, those people were just looking for an excuse to give up. Which is there call and nobody elses.
I like CS and will continue to play it, for the fact that I can at any time find a server and play. Thats what keeps me going ... Oh and that I have found people in the NT like me that have formed a team and doing damn well at it :)

Because before Steam, there was none of these errors. If I wanted to connect to a server using custom models it would be fine. I'm grateful when I can connect to a server!
Trying to get into a server a few weeks ago, involved me retrying from anything above once because I'd get an error, but if I kept doing it I'd eventually can in. How can anybody clarify that with logic? It really isn't working too well and they should've definitely taken more time to handle it before releasing it.
There's also an update once every 3 days... not for a game, but for Steam. It has a beautiful concept behind it, like I was told it had downloaded CZ for me (not without telling me... but whatever...) and so if I wanted to buy it, I could just purchase online and be playing straight away.
Edit: Added link to my topic in Hardware Forum
Edit2: Got rid of my link as I fixed the problem

CS beta 1 was released in June of 1999... So even if you started playing on the day it was released, it wouldn't be quite 5 years. ;)
Post 13
yeah maybe 3 .. heheh
And custom models arnt allowed .. Thought it might be the server .. I run custom models for everything but the player and it works on every server.
So before you guys wanna say Steam is a load of crap. Maybe you guys just dont have the time to look at why u are getting the errors u are. And instantly blame steam.
One thing that puts me off, is people that blame steam for something that goes wrong when its 9 out of 10 times there own fault that error is happening

I personally never had any major troubles with Steam.
Post 15
in that case, steam isn't simple enough to use, and should not be the main distribution point for any games yet.

I'll second that. other than perhaps a few downtimes, which can be annoying but life goes on.

That's the thing though, the program is damn simple anyone should be able to use it. Not like it's any different to the old way of cs, just it's a little more like the style of server query. In terms of errors and problems, well I agree with Kurt half the people just can't be bothered to have a 5min look to see if theres a fix or a reason to the problem. That also applies to a great portion of computer users, who as soon as they hit a problem they say bleh this is stupid and then don't use it. It's a great shame as it isn't complicated just needs 5min of your time and great tool called google :)

I have played CS since CS V1.3 only because no-one at DGA EVO1 was playing DoD.. Grrrrrr
So I played this game a bit....Then a bit more...then I played it more than DoD...Then after a while it was all I played....
I would say that I got a little addicted with playing CS....Maybe more than a little, perhaps obsessed is closer to the fact.
So I would play CS for at least 5-6 hours every day.....on friday nights I would play from the time I got off from work until about 4-5 a.m. Sleep for a few hours and then try to play CS for as long as I could over Saturday and Sunday. This went on for about 1 1/2 years and it had taken it's toll on me, all I could think about was CS....At work - CS, At Home - CS, At Sleep - CS.....etc...etc...
So I think that the release of CS V1.6 was such a blessing to me in thefact that it shitted me off that much that I have basically stopped playing CS alltogether.....I don't blame Steam for it...The game had changed and I didn't like the change so I didn't want to play it anymore.
At LANS I still wanna play CS V1.5 and will play it for as long as there is someone on the server.....I love CS V1.5 but I hate CS V1.6.
So I am happy that I am finally over CS - the game that stole my soul....
Post 18
well I have played CS since........V1.5
and don't play anymore
and thats my story

I still play CS and DoD every so often, but my new game of choice is Star Wars Galaxies. it just takes up so much of my gaming time, I never get a chance to play anything else :)

Still play CS, still play DoD... CoD is my 'new' game and I love it.
*sigh* I've been playing for quite a while and remember the good ol' days of the early/mid Beta's. But I became active around Beta 7 and retail. Didn't get that good that quick... in fact, I got worse for quite a while.
Been getting better since 1.6 came along though and, even with all the dickheads, I can still have an exhilerating game occasionally, especially when a few old mates are there to play alongside you :)

RIP: PAz0r Beta 2 to v1.5
Yeh, 1.6 killed it for me aswell >:/
But also other factors like year 12, work, drinking and gambling took up my time

been playing cs addictively since evo 3.5 (june 2003), got absolutely addicted to it, but been getting bored of cs lately due to me not being in a clan anymore, i own pub servers and theres nothing really more i can learn from them :|
I cant wait until the new video cards get released because i already have $800 sitting there for either the Geforce 6800 Ultra or Radeon X800 Pro (:D) and that means i'll finally be able to play the only game since CS that has actually really appealed to me in a big way...
UT2004
Post 25
thats a challenge - ut2004 is so diff to cs but i must say the first unreal tournament i really liked. but then i havnt been the same since a piece of stalagnite fell on my head in a cave in NZ. :0
I guess i could give away my new copy of ut2004 if someone wanted it but doesnt seem to be many takers.
As for cs I still think its pretty good even with shit steam. if someone can tell me the most famous marathon runner (new york- boston marathon -hint) they can have my ut2004 in the mail next day

In my opinion, I think hype generated by upmarket new games is way too much... maybe I'm bitter that I can't play them who knows but I seriously think that everything is overhyped... In terms of gameplay the old games just rock hard...
I still find fun in CS... but then again it's a luxury for me to play it because 1. school and 2. I only play at dualith's house... CS is just one of a kind... not many other games allow for such versatility and combination of ability, strategy and choice...
I still fail to understand this huge hate for cs... IMO bf1942 and DC can't be played with as much depth as CS... biased or not that may be but thats how i see it....
Post 30
I still find CS interesting... despite some changes in game play (can't plant and move to avoid getting hit at the same time; can't use sniper rifles as shotguns cause the took off the crosshairs).
Grow old? Nah...
EDIT: I find myself playing less CS... and more *cough cough* airsoft...
*cough cough* illegal here in Aus *cough cough* might as well do the real thing... *cough cough*

thats so lame... I agree that some players are really really stupid and idiotic but seriously no need to bag the whole game because of a little crappiness of players... I mean if you don't like the players then press ~ and type 'disconnect' and pick a new server... simple solution for simple problem
Post 33
no, its the die hard mindset of the majority of the players who flat out refuse to give other, newer, potentially better games a go that causes the hatred.

You'd probably find that most players will try the newer 'potentially' (emphasis on the quotations) better games and then find them crap and go back to CS... Now lets compare the competition in the same genre (out of fairness because there are some awesome games in other genres) There is UT2004, BF1942/DC. UT2004 is relatively new so its probably still establishing a player base but UT is mostly known for 1v1 FPS battles... BF/DC: From what I have seen (correct if im wrong) but this game requires like crap all skill to play in comparison with CS. Team strategy looks non existant... look I dunno but someone who has played these games and still goes back to CS help me out here...

consider yourself corrected.
BF/DC is worthless without Team strategy. CS is point and shoot.. Team Strats help.. whereas BF/DC need team strats of you lose. Simple.
Post 36
its exactly that perceived 'skill' that cs players keep raving about that make them so detestable as well. as though their game is somehow superior, and they are superior gamers for playing it. news flash. you're not.
Post 37
HAHAHAHA this is the part where I laugh really REALLY loud...
Now lets take a look at this... CS is biggest and highest playing PRO-GAME in the world... now Burk your one to talk as you seem to hate CS with a vengeance... try playing and try your 'point and shoot' theory...
CS requires a lot more skill than most of the new games... same with pretty much every game of that generation... Q3A, UT, Brood Wars games that require lots of speed, reflexes, fast thinking and wait look at those i just mentioned.. what are they OMG SKILLS... I'm not saying that CS is totally the most skill intensive game but for crying out loud nothing really compares to these skill intensive games in this new age except for UT2004 but thats based off an original game and concept in the same era as CS...
Post 38
see, and that laughing out loud reinforces the perception of cs players being a bunch of cockheads. i guarantee you that if cs was suddenly deleted from the world, and all the cs'ers picked up another game for three or four months, they'd be clamouring about how much skill their particular 'new' game requires too. they've found a niche they can be happy in now, and are reluctant to emerge from it and find out they're crap at other games. fear of change, fear of freedom.
Post 39
Quote from leonami:

The solution is not as simple as you propose. There will always be dickheads except on strictly maintained servers... which noone tends to play on.

Why not? It seems as valid a point as any. The problem is that the ratio of dickheads - normal players is heading rapidly towards the dickheads being in the majority. CS seems to be the game that everybody starts out on - they cop a whole lot of crap in the beginning and, more than likely, because of this they end up dishing out crap to others when they discover how to accurately move a mouse.
It's a big cycle and public play is full of arseholes that are bent on destroying the game for others. There has never been anything like this in other games that I can remember. I used to play UT and Q3 online and this just wasn't an issue. CoD hasn't encountered this problem, nor did MOH:AA before it. It seems to be pretty confined to the CS player base - hell, even DoD doesn't have this. They even have clans for the purpose of destroying the game for others: Myg0t.
Quote:
There is UT2004, BF1942/DC
Only two examples?
UT2004 doesn't really need to establish a player base as it has quite a large one from the previous UT games. Oh and UT was not known for 1v1 battles - Q3 was.

BF/DC: From what I have seen (correct if im wrong) but this game requires like crap all skill to play in comparison with CS. Team strategy looks non existant... look I dunno but someone who has played these games and still goes back to CS help me out here...
As someone that tried BF/DC and went back to CS - you are wrong. Public play for CS is being in the right place at the right time more often than not - there is skill involved, as with every game - but BF/DC requires that you are watching what is happening in several areas and with a number of players at the same time. It is also harder to kill someone in BF/DC than it is in CS. Then there's the vehicles... which are unbelievably hard to get used to and require extreme dedication in order to be good at them. Then there is the matter of teamwork - which is almost non-existent in CS in Public play.
Quote:

Very much agreed. Go into any GA player and you will hear a flurry of insults, leet speak and general arrogant behaviour from the majority of players. They all think that they are gods gift to gaming.
Quote:

Whoa, back up. Gotta disagree heavily here. Q3A requires fast everything, the gameplay is frantic all the time. You don't keep up - you're dead. UT is slightly more paced but UT2k3 and 2k4 are as fast. Brood War is all about tactics - out thinking and maneuvering your opponent. CS doesn't necessarily need any of these in order to be good/better than the other players in the server. Why is it that quite a lot of people can come on completely drunk and hammer everything in the game? I'd like to see them do it with games like Brood War or Q3A.

Because it was once extemely popular due to Half Life's major successes. It was a 'free' addon to Half Life and was fun. It also didn't require a super-duper computer to run it. Nowadays it just seems like it's a bit past its use-by date.
Quote from paladin:
see, and that ...... fear of change, fear of freedom.
Very much agreed. I kinda hope that doesn't happen... for the sake of the game that they decide to pick up... Unless it's something like Halo
Post 40
Umm I'm sorry if that came out the wrong way but I maent the games of the same generation all require heaps of skill to play... So basically im agreeing with what you said...
When you say UT isn't 1v1 based well it is in the progaming scene... When I narrowed the list down I was naming new games...
and although past its use-by date, CS is still heavily played and the pro gaming scene is very big... much the same with Brood Wars... if there was a game better then it would quickly outclass these games on the pro scene... (and with the requirement of less skill it would be a quick transition)
I totally agree with all your points about public servers but why shun CS because most of its public players are adolescents who probably just had their balls drop... CS is a good game and by hating its players you are thereby hating the game, players make the game...
Ok lets step back for a moment and look at the skill thing... if you played CS competitively (and i know you have/do ben) then you will remember that there are things like recoil control (not an easy thing i tell you) headshots, team strategy ( lots of it) these all make up the 'skill' that i talk about... not apparent in public, but competitively yes definitely.
In answer to the fear thing... well I think because people have been playing CS for so long, they just haven't found any games that fully suit their CS attuned tastes... CS is very unique and not many games seem to offer as much versatility... the biggest thing is the buying weapons/money thing... not many games have this feature and I guess to me thats what sets it apart from other games

I'd hate to see CS go.... I prefer 1.5 ..... still although that has gone, I WOULD like to see 1.6 stick around for alot longer, but yet... CZ is out... I like it... but not as much as CS standard.
I really like CS, People call me old fasioned (in the games scene of thigns) but I just like CS and thats about it, I play DC sometimes on lan, NFS:U sometime, and CoD, but I finished singleplayer NFS:U and CoD, now they're boring... DC is just same thing over and over and I THINK .. slower than CS.
CS is fun... I like it, was a good game, still is a good game :)
[EDIT: Best CS I've played was 1.3 with the sweet jumping Deagle Headshots.. w00t :P]

Never really got drawn too much to CS. Played it alot mainly because it tended to become the only game available.
These days the only games I play are NWN, Kohan and Quake. For those not familiar with Kohan, it's an older game not many noticed (Starcraft-era I think) but is quite good. Unusual but pretty cool economy system.
Not that much time for games anymore though, full time Uni and part-time work tend to take alot of my time.

I love cs and lie i ever more since i got adsl :D

I liked CS when it first came out due mostly to its round based system, not random spawn, dash, die.
The "dead time" allowed social conversation (flaming and others) with other souls dead as well, commenting on how the team was going is my normal fare.
I tried my hand at Q3 and others of its type (spawn, run around, kill or be killed, spawn again) but soon went back to cs mainly because i got the feeling that i was just a killing machine, no talk all action, and i felt that it was limiting my social reason to play in the first place (hell if i want that ill play single player against bots).
As Lataf said its all about fun.
I play for fun, "killing" someone on teh other side of the country and imagining thier face as they are outrushed by me (yes usually drunk or other in front of the keys) and then hearing thier rage when i die and they rant to me purgatory is what keeps me going back to it.
I have recently aquired a full LAN demo (like the real game, just cant go online) of UT2k4 and think that its layout, weapons, vehicles, building and varied style of games is a good winner (like all the versions before), and with voicechat the feeling of teamwork is returning without my gnarled fingers having to type at thier poor rate while i get shot at.
It may be the new game i concentrate more time on, but at no stage could i say it was "better or worse" than any other game i have played, it just appeals to me slightly more at this time.
I have no illusions that a "better" gme will be around the corner and ill try my hand at that, even if its just to gauge the differences in my current fav game.
Each to thier own
(oops ranted bit far there)
