I am curious to see wether people actually see ANZAC day as anything more than a public holiday or if they are into the whole people going away and fighting and remembering them and going to the parade and dawn services and such? Personally i have come from a family with lots of military background so since i can remember i have gone to the dawn service and parades. and since i have been old enough, after we go to the pub and get absoloutley smashed and play two up... how its always been done in my family. but i cant this year because im at a confrence thing *sob*
Umm both, personally if anyone doesn't care I think they are quite heartless people. I don't even come from Aust but I still respect what happend, I might not go to the parade as such but the thought is definately there.
I care... when I think about it. I understand what ANZAC day is about (and what ANZAC means :P) but I mostly just see it as a holiday still. (Monday, anyhow).
I was told I was being patriotic when I bought a bunch of them ANZAC biscuits... never knew the story behind them but all I know is that it tastes like heaven... then the old program kicks in... put in the mouth and chew :mrgreen:
means loads to me, a lot of my relatives fought and died so it runs strong in my scottish blood, :) australia is a make up of a lot of different nationalitys whether they came here 200 years ago or 20 years ago there is still the burning desire to be proud of the anzac heritage, and as far as i am concerned if you would not fight for the country then you dont deserve to be a citizen, imo.
Australia wouldnt be like it is today without the work the heros did back then. Dont you people forget it. I respect ANYONE who stands up for the rights of their country and for the rights of people. I believe australia should be More patriotic. How many of you know the national anthem. Just my thoughts.
Why should anzac day be appreciated whilst they were fighting for a country they took over from aboriginals.
However I do respect the veterans who gave thier all for a cause whilst I cant justify the reason. Perhaps due to my multicultural background. I have a lot of respect for Australia I just question the idea that thier causes are better then anyone elses purely for the fact they say it was for peace.
Maybe Im starting an argument Im trying to be objective about the situation.
I'm an extreme pacifist and I believe that nationalistic values have caused a rediculous amount of problems throughout history, but I still respect ANZAC day and what they did.

It should be phrased "People that fought for our country". The simple reason being that war is hell. We shouldnt be fighting any more unless for the good of the world, such as WWII: The ANZAC spirit. Get out of iraq, the solomans and PNG. Not associated with ANZAC spirit.
They were fighting for our current way of life. No one knows what it would have been like if we had lost but germany wasnt exactly the most democratic place to live at that time. How do u think it would have made the rest of the world if we lost?? No one will ever know. I dont respect and remember the wars, i remember the people who died for the future of others. ANYONE who has to fight in a war deserves respect, not because of who sent them there, but the fact that they are willing to DIE for what they believe is right. I respect that.
sorry i guess i should have qualified, that was in response to speros rubbish about them fighting for a country they took from the aboriginals, which is irrelevant sensationalist crap. they fought AS australians, in a war that was about an ideal and a way of life, they honoured their committments to the british empire, and suffered horrendous casualties for it. anybody who doesn't hold immense pride for our troops, can get the fuck out of my country, now.

Colonial Australia, it first confilct was the pacification of the native NZer's. We sent an ironclad the NZ to bombard them, as well as soldiers that got paid in land.
you think they're any less deserving of respect and admiration? they're not over there because of their own political agenda, they're over there because thats where their orders take them. big ups to every single one of our servicemen/women serving overseas.
I dont care about Anzac day as a public holiday, i care about the people who died for me, for you and for our way of life. The only light in which Anzac day should be looked at, as a day of rememberence and respect.
Anzac Day has been molded to be a respectful day for ALL service men and women no matter when they served. I give hats off to those that died in East Timor just as much to those that Died in Turkey. And to those that died around the world.
They are doing what they see is right, no less then any other person next to them. To say they arnt ANZACs is wrong. They are all fighting for the same cause.
You guys know that iraq is the first war we're ever gone to without NZ by our side? What does that say about ANZAC spirit? That another country of equal patrotism and freedom loving doesnt want to war?

I dont think its fair that Howard is hiding behind ANZAC day to gain support for troops that are not supposed to be there. The pure fact is those soliders are NOT the same as the ones fighting in galipoli(sp?), or world war II, where they were often recruits and diggers (not forced to go). The feeling i got watching the news this anzac day, is its more about politics than ever. Moreover its my bloody right to get up on my soapbox (and your right not to care either ;)) because thats what the ANZAC troops were fighting for, freedom of speech, and way of life. This i have great respect for, but when the morals and ambitions of the curret dispatchment comes up, i feel nothing but contempt.
