One of the best DGA lans in recent times, mainly due to the introduction of Cs : Source. Good to see some old school csers comming back. :) Also had a Warcraft III FFA, well it was supposed to be ffa but knight and my plague teamed up :P
CS:S has revived the game a lot... When I left at 6AM on Sunday there were still tonnes of people (in comparison to the entire population still awake) still playing... Although I wish there were more people who would put up ftp servers... windows file sharing is gay...
A suggestion....get someone who knows what they are doing to setup an FTP for anyone who wants to share a large amount of files...that should be a big help to a lot of people, as firt time I was told to setup FTP, it was a little daunting cause I knew nothing about it....As of Jan, I'd be more than willing to help out with this ;)
I had a fairly good time. Timetable was moderately successful, had some good games of battlefield, savage, dc, deathball when tribes failed, and then an awesome game of serious sam for the chupachup challenge...
second day didn't really happen, had about six people for halo and about the same for clone bandits, not really surprising. Attendance probably wasn't as high as I'd have liked, but source was getting a lot of attention.
80 person limit meant that we got through the lan with no real power issues (only one clumsy fool issue). Definitely had a good time, especially not having to think about what to play next
Fantastic LAN I thought. Nice and cool indoors, people were mainly gaming instead of leeching and everyone looked happy and healthy.
Just one note. Some sick individual did a number two in the male’s toilets and he made a ****ing mess. This was extremely disgusting and this person should be shot. We have to clean this mess up and it’s not pleasant to say the least.
I decided to use the toilet to pee, and when i lifted the seat lid, i saw a green tree frog in there...
so i closed the lid and used the wall instead.
and while i was washing my hands, i saw one of the longgrassers enter into the toilet. I was waiting for him to freak out of something about the frog and leave
Instead, i saw his pants drop around his ankles in the mirror.
No power issues, except Mr. Clumsy, which i missed. No network issues, except a switch playing up at the start.
I was on the door the whole 2 days, and if i could ask everyone attending, please do not take your stuff in until you've talked to me (or whoever) at least, there were several times i had to chase people up who hadn't paid. At EVO, nobody will be allowed in until they have paid.
I've already thanked the people who became members in another thread, but thanks again. We need more. :)
I managed to play 1 hour of NFSU2 and 30 mins of DC.. and that's about it. :P always seemed to be busy.
Thanks again gamers, if you have any issues/ideas, i urge you to post here or pm/email me burk@internode.on.net.
Yes the whole thing went off, i didn't particualy enjoy StareWars (what ever it was) but other then that it was sweet LAN, i remember 50% of my time was spent playing NFSU2 which is a great game.
I wasn't up for DC and never joined but Source was sickness good server for it.
Quote from Ph3n0m3n0n: are you >owa< ? Im owa, and i swear you were hacking... if not you should move to sydney and attend their lans because you are too good. And the dude "John" he was an ultimate tk'er and i kicked his arse. (no hard feelings) I had like 300 cs maps and i couldnt find anyone wanting to depart from css. CSS rules but it needs more maps, the origs are too boring nowadays. I wanted to enter some of the comps but couldnt find where to get the games from, oh well. Next time. Next time i will rule your arse Ph3n0m3n0n. There needs to be a server up hosting the games that are being played on the timetable, that was unfortunate. Had to get them mostly by windows file sharing.

well i know for a fact that there was a server with every game being played on the timetable, available to download from via ftp, although it was going rather slow.
paladin is right, dont brag about it, u will get urself in trouble, do what is right, GO AND BUY THE GAME!!!!
owa_13 pala and neotheo are correct in the fact that you should not talk about leeching games on the internet. you can get GU and DGA into strife. if your at a lan and need help with obtaining games/patches please see a admin/official and we will gladly help you.
BTW i'm thinking about setting up an intranet forum for next DGA, but i think i'll need some help from the admins. tell me what u guys think about having a forum at next DGA. How did the mini-forum at a previous DGA go?
real time chatting, aka, irc. it's been done. the trick isn't to DO it, the trick is to get people to USE it.
and again, the problem with setting it up like this forum, is it requires people to actively refresh pages to look for updates. that's bad. you want to ram it down their throats so they see it. people are LAZY. they need to be spoon fed.
lol, dont worry, i'll try to make it painless and lazy as possible (eg. type in address, click join)
the problem i see with IRC is that some people will have to download a program for it, then install it etc. hopefully making it all online will make it easier for people
grab a java irc applet, run that up on a webserver. fixes the installation problem. if people can install games tho, i'm sure they can install a 600kb irc client.
Another option is to use http://cgiirc.sourceforge.net/ - its a CGI client that runs from a webserver pretty painless to setup as far as i know we have one running for darwinwireless -= http://linseed.homelinux.org/cgi-bin/cgiirc/irc.cgi =-
saves people installing if they complain about it ;)
oh god, a polling irc client? that's just so ... icky. web based html chat seems like such a hack, when a minutes effort gives you real time glory!!@#%
I did not really enjoy DGA 32. I cannot say the timetable was sucessfull as most ppl did not take part.
My Ideas For The Next Lan!! ;)
Major clan wars. :D perhaps instead of having a tourny for one game at a time, have a series of games and an overall score for each outcome of each game all in 1 comp. This would take alot of time and managment but im sure would be very enjoyable. The projector could display the teams scores or any other information. Im sure it would have all teams on the edge of their seats for the comp.
But thats just an idea, i dont know what anybody else thinks about that??? ;)
Quote from cham pipple: I did not really enjoy DGA 32. Don't suppose you could elaborate on that a little? What (other than your tourney suggestion) could have made it a better lan for you?
And also, one can not realistically expect to get all DGA attendees to follow any sort of timetable. Considering the number of people that were there for mainly leeching, and also considering the popularity of CS Source, the numbers we were seeing in timetabled games was quite good.
Thats what I mean Cham...Im not into the whole team thing, I just wanna log in and play, dont want to worry about having to find people who will play with me, etc just so I can play a game...this is why I like the TimeTable idea
wratlon? were you at dga 32? because if not u obivously dont know how it turned out? from my perspective bad. a quater of the lan took part if not much less, and by the time we got to halo no one was playing
I wasnt cause I was in Perth, but from what I have seen, it looks good. Also a quarter of 80 people in a single game at one time makes for good gaming, thats like 20 people playing.....also as was said, a lot of people were playing CS:S as its only new....the system from where I stand is a good one and with a few modifications could be much better, this was only a trial run, so naturally its not going to be as good as it can be.
Even so, clan wars is not going to help anyone who doesnt like having to go through that sort of effort just to play a game, it will go back to being people who want to clan war get heaps of gaming, and those that dont have to look around and try and find a server with more than 3 other people on it to get a game of something.
The 2 can co-exist quite easily, Clan wars is fine, but keep the TimeTable as it alows people like me to know whats being played as opposed to having to guess....trying to unsuccesfully to find a game worth joining while they clan war normally leaves me bored and I start leeching.
Quote from cham pipple: from my perspective bad. a quater of the lan took part if not much less, and by the time we got to halo no one was playing While not very many people played, Halo and Clone Bandits (2nd day games) WERE played (around 6 of us i think). This is the first time any sort of timetable has EVER been run at a dga. All things considered, it went very well.
20 odd people in the same game at the same time is a VERY good number. I think with DesertCombat we hit around 35-40 at some stage.
Quote from neotheo: ...which made this dga the best i have been to
Agreed, I loved this lan, the timetable really added a new element to it.
Regarding the 20 or so people playing, I found it was usually (on the first day and night) about 30-40 people, taking into consideration that CS: Source was being played all day and night by a lot of people, that is a fairly good number of people.
the games timetable was/is nothing more than a suggestion.
the whole point is to try make the lan as enjoyable as possible for most people. at lans (other than dga32) i found my self either sitting there, not knowing what to play, or walking about trying to find out what most people were playing. With the timetable, just look on the front page of the intranet and you know what's being played by *hopefully* the majority of people at the lan.
Hopefully we can get Ugly Game Server working and you can just visit the intranet and see what everyone is in at the time.
There was a decision made by the organisers not to run competitions at dga32 to promote the games timetable, and i'm sorry if that wasn't to your liking, but it was made well known on GU forums. The decision was also made to try and stop leeching until at least midnight. You all know the LAN could run on 10mb/s if nobody leeched.
If the organisers decide, the timetable will again run at EVO, hopefully two different games at a time as was previously suggested. (not saying anything here, it's not my area) Hopefully there will be competitons, and many of them. (again, not my area)
Your lan is organised by people just like you! and they do their best to make it as fun and enjoyable as possible. if something really gets up your goat, visit the roles and responsibilities thread and tell them admin in charge of that area.
I was the main admin in charge at DGA32, due to eaters crappy stomach and raker/cocky working, and i felt that we (admins/organisers) did everything in our power to make it a great lan, and i felt we achieved that. Thanks to all the helpers and the gamers for coming, and the people who became members.. good on you.
I can't wait for EVO to rock my socks! If there is anything you would really like to happen, feel free to contact the particular admin, or pm me and i'll pass it on. Remember, there are no stupid suggestions, only stupid people.
