There's nothing on any of the seismology sites just yet. I've reported the tremor to the USGS, I imagine they'll have it on their metres.
Various journalists will be getting urgent phone calls - the NT News press deadline is 9pm ....

I felt the first one - had a cup of coffee next to me and was watching it shake. Only went for about 2 or 3 seconds. I asked my wife if she felt it, and she gave me this look as if to say, "Okay, dear...whatever."
Then the long one started, and we were watching my computer desk shake, feeling the floors shake, and she started to freak out a bit this time.
We went downstairs (just in case...).

Yeah my wife and myself felt it when we were eating dinner and we felt the ground and the table started to shake!
I thought it was the buliding at first, but then reliased it was an earthquake.
Looked out the window but couldn't see anything moving out the window so thought to be only in our building!

I was sitting on the Fouton and i thought Heretic (house mate) had snuck through the front door and was shaking the couch.
I told him to bugger off, then when he didnt stop, i turned around and no-one was there.
I was so freaked out. THen i sat down at my puter and the freaking monitor was rocking back and forth. I live about 100m's from teh beach...i had thoughts of Tsunami's going through my head :p

its pretty amazing... if you look at most geology sites you will notice that there have been almost double since the Indo tsunami between 6 - 7 EVERY DAY! mainly on remote islands. pretty scary realy

Well, it was a pretty big quake that happened prior to the tsunami.
The plates are still moving and theres bound to be some residual occurances after such a large quake.

a tsunami will be unlikly, because the earthquake occured quite deep within the Earth, too far to affect the ocean surface, and therefore no tsunami.

But to feel the earth quake you have to be close to the fault line to feel and earth quake 600 km away your feeling just a vibration from 600 km's so really we didnt feel the earth quake it was just a tremer :P there is a difference

what the hell are you feeling if you're right next to the goddamn epicentre? thats right. a goddamn vibration, aka, a tremor. regardless of where you stand, you are feeling the tremors that are caused by the earthquake, hence, feeling the earthquake.

what your feeling is actually the earth plates moving and its more then a vibration earth actually shifts tremers arent anything compared to what its like to be near the fault line hences why they only call them tremers and not an earth quake.
If you've ever been anywhere near a fault line you will feel the difference

Tremer is vibration in the earth crust which is caused by an earth quake after effects.
Earth quake is Fault plates shifting usally causing Ground to raise or lower and can also cause volcanos to become active or even worse causing Tsunamai but i dunno which would be worse to die from a giant wave or from volcano magma.
who cares we have tremers atleast 3 times a year not like its anything wonderful.
we are just feeling after effects of an earth quake, with the tremers we had last night. If it was an earth quake there would be structure damager thru out darwin not saying tremers cant cause that but it would have to be a pretty shitty building to have structure damage from a tremeor.
So asking someone did you feel the tremer answer would be "yes"

If we had felt the rath of this earth quake i can tell you right now alotta buildings in the darwin area would have structure damage

5.0-6.0 ( Moderate earthquake)
Moderate to severe damage
6.0 and above (Strong earthquake)

The fact we were 600 km we felt the after effects of the quake which are called tremers which are just vibrations.
an knight the world experiences 80,000 Earth quakes each year just because we cant feel the tremers that well doesnt mean they didnt happen most arent recorded eg 1.0 or 2.0
do you really think they will record a 1.0 earth quake or even the tremers or put them in the news paper not even worth it.

im going to have to agree with korny on pretty much everything there.... put simply he is right. and that earthquake last night was nothing. i used to live in vanuatu. right on the pacific ring of fire. and we had a 7.2 hit close to us...... anything in the shelves were no longer in the shelves all cupboards opened. bed slid across the room. bookcases fell over cracks formed in the bricks in the houses. trees fellover. and the after shocks ranged from 3 to 5 on the richter scale. of which there were about 75 to 100 of.

You can feel an earthquake because what comes from an earthquake are tremors. Tremors basically being waves being emitted from the source of the earthquake, that is the plates moving, land slipping whatever.
Earthquake - event. Tremor - what comes from the earthquake.
Feel the quake/tremor same deal more or less.
So yes of course it was ****ing earthquake. Why weren't buildings damaged, because the 7.2 epicentre was 660km away. So it would've been quite a bit lower by the time the waves reached Darwin.

We got a good shake even if it was far away. I was in a lecture at uni. Trippy stuff. little bit of panic some people even ran away. I just sat there and watched the walls shake. Cool when the big White/Blackboard up the foront started to rattle.
