With the Verdict only 20 mins away.. i think shes gonna get 5 years!

Post 2

A deal has been done for sure as the Feds know they have ****ed this one up.

I think she will get 20years to life and then within 6 months she will be brought back home as part of a prisoner exchange and she will serve the term home detention or minimal security, and after a year or two they will quietly pardon her and we will forget all about it.

The media has been nothing short of disgraceful :(

Post 3

Can you say ' For the term of your natural life'....poor bitch, and it was only weed too. Imagine spendng all your life in a frickin indonesian prison for owning some pot.

Post 4

Agreed.

Anyone reminded of the Starship Troopers news? Execution at six! Live, all channels!

At least that's the impression I always get...

Post 5

i don't think she did it

and i think if it was a proper court, with a proper airport run by non-corrupt policemen she'd be fine.

but it wasnt, and the airport security ****ed it up with no proper security cameras, no proper processing procedures of the bag etc etc

she should be given not guilty based on the incompetence of the indos

I got to say I agree too. I think it is actually a new low in Australian journalism. Media Watch had a thing on about how some of the TV channels were interviewing family members, and broadcasting some of their comments which may well have affected the trial. Then you get comments like this one from 2WG's Malcolm Elliott which doesnt really help anything...

* What Elliott said on air in an exchange with a caller on May 15 about the judges hearing Corby's case:

Elliott: "The judges don't even speak English, mate, they're straight out of the trees, if you excuse my expression."

Caller: "Don't you think that disrespects the whole of our neighbouring nation?"

Elliott: "I have total disrespect for our neighbouring nation my friend. Total disrespect.

"And then we get this joke of a trial, and it's nothing more than a joke. An absolute joke the way they sit there. And they do look like the three wise monkeys, I'll say it.

"They don't speak English, they read books, they don't listen to her. They show us absolutely no respect those judges."

What a joke....why should they even have to speak english? Whats it got to do with anything about the trial. rant rant rant

I often wonder why there is no baggage certification at an airport, you present your luggage for inspection, allow the contents to be photographed/weighed, then have the luggage sealed with some form of 'tamper proof tape', have the information recorded, and bamn, plausible deniability if anything untoward happens to your luggage from that point on. Make it voluntary so privacy nuts dont whinge their box off about it, sounds like a winner to me.

Post 8

from what i've heard now, airports will wrap your bags in security plastic stuff (tamper proof) for a small charge

Post 9

I firmly believe that she's innocent. It makes no sense what so ever to smuggle weed into Bali. It wouldn't make anywhere near enough money to justify the effort and risk. I imagine that the weed was meant to be taken out by baggage handlers before the luggage was loaded onto the Bali flight. It does not surprise me that baggage handlers have been part of a drug ring for ages. I have a mate who got work at Qantas baggage handling through his dad being a pilot, he said they wouldn't even talk to new blokes, it was all very hush-hush. The Indonesian justice system is a joke, and I have no respect for it either. Innocent until proven guilty? That's a joke. It's un-democratic and has a complete disrespect for human rights. I personally always wanted to go to Bali, but now I will never go there. I will take my business else where as will a lot of people I know.

Post 10

Cow, some countries won't allow that. I know when I was travelling in America you have to grant customs/baggage people full access to your luggage. You aren't even allowed to lock it. But yeah, I will definately be using that whenever I'm allowed.

Post 11

Either way if she is found guilty a lot of Aussies will be cancelling their indonesion/bali trips...this will hurt them more than the Bali Bombings did :(

Post 12

I expect 5 - 10 years imprisonment.
I highly doubt she will be found not-guilty. The indonesian courts simply cant afford to lose face like that.

i went to bali a couple months ago, and these days all luggage MUST be securely locked, otherwise they simply won't let it on. at the darwin airport, once they've identified that it's secured, they'll get you to state that there's nothing criminal about the contents, and then they'll date and sign a sticker which they attach to your bag.

also, at the bali airport, you just have to use a little common sense. there will be carrier dudes who will be pretty insistent about helping you carry your shit to the carpark, so you just have to learn how to say no. i found not smiling and only saying it once worked wonders.

Post 14

Heh. Thats IF its still on the carousel.
Both times i've been there, its been in the hands of the porters, before I'm off the plane.

As much as I hate to say it, I think this will happen as well. There is no way the court will let her off with the amount of media there.

However, if they did find her guilty with the amount of media coverage, they're decision would cause uproar in many countries and could be the detriment to bali's tourism industry even moreso than the bali bombings like coco said.

Quote from cow:

I have heard this as well, I thinks its "0au.

But I am going to fiji in 3 weeks, I will be damn sure that I have video taped what my contents are inside the bag either before/during the customs inspections.

These 3 judges have never given an non-guilty verdict so it's not a matter of saving face. It's a matter of your accused, you cant prove your innocent by bringing us the guilty people so tough rocks :(

Post 17

Im sorry if u dont like another countries policy on crimanl activity u should not go there. And remember every country does have a right to enforce it own laws.

Post 18

I just heard she got 20 years. I'm never going to Bali or Indonesia ever in my life.

Apathy, I wonder what you would be saying if you were wrongly accused of something, and ended up facing 20 years imprisonment in a foreign jail.

Post 19

Yep 20 years.......

Post 20

****, well it wasnt clear, but they mentioned 20 years, then said something 6 months, then mentioned some fine

but some stupid bitch interpreting couldnt get it right, but..channel nine newsflashed 20 years

Post 21

I was just saying that if u go to any country u have to make a decision. Indonesia is known for there legal system being corrupt and incoppent at a high level. Im not saying what happen was right.

20 years imprisonment, schapelle to pay 1million Rubea? (sp) or another 6mths will be added on.
She will be remanded in custody.
She will appeal, but judicial process will take months.
Aust gov't to try to "prisoner exchange" with indonesian prisoners currently held here.
Foreign minister to give speech within the hour
Family and friends following schapelle to jail....

I didnt mean the judges saving face, i meant the entire indonesian judicial system.
To have an international spot light on this case, and them come out with a not-guilty verdict would, in their eyes, give the green light for future drug trafficking.

Its a shitty sentence, but im totally not suprised at all.

Post 25

True mate

Post 26

Considering all the help that Australia has given Bali/Indonesia over the last few years, you would think that in order to upstand the current diplomatic relations between our two countries that IF the decision was guilty, deportation and jail sentence would be carried out in country of birth/residence.
This case will continue for a long time yet, with schapelle to have 2 appeals processes if needed.
She has until next wed to decide to accept verdict or appeal

Post 27

Post 29

I feel so sorry for her, there is no way she is guilty, She is so innocent....

They didnt weight her bags before the flight, only after, so they couldn't of known when it was put in, I think thats suss.... and dickhead Alexander Downer was holding evidence from the Indonisian police, evidence that works in her favour!

20 Years, and If she doesn't pay the fine an extra 6 months on top..... pffft after 20 years im sure she wouldn't care about an extra 6 months, I think its Terrible, very appauling!

Ph3n am Mad!

Alexander Downer wont distribute the info, because it will incriminate the Aust Gov't and the lack of security in customs and baggage handling. John Howard and Alexander Downer are ducking their heads and staying away from this whole situation in order to avoid their "public" relations to stay intact with both australia and indonesia.

whilst I dont agree with the term... 20years .. she wont last that long, will be made somebodies bitch and will off herself ..

Welcome to the world of indonesia different country different way of doing things.

Post 34

thats the problem with a system that decides you are guilty from the onset. Even the police had that mindset.
No finger printing, No testing to find out where the plants came from.
It was a case of your are guilty and do the work your self...
it would have been thrown out as a joke fi it was in australia, and I am quite sure that a number of officers would have been asked to leave...

Post 35

its all bs if you ask me.

Post 36

I see it like this.

Make an example of her.

and now those other 9.. they will be executed.

Remember, we arnt in Australia anymore .. its indonesia .. They dont care that she gets 20yrs .. only reason that people care is becuase its all over the TV all the time.

Post 37

MASH Wins.

This ruling does not.

Post 38

Mastermind of the Bali Bombings got 2-4 years?? Killed 100+ people.

Importing 4.1 KG of dope that you could sell for 10 times the price in Australia gets 20 years..

Unseen seriously dood....something aint right with that...why the **** would you smuggle dope into Bali when you can buy it on the ****ing beach for a tenth of the price you can get it Aus.

And John Howard tells us all to accept it....if his stupid AFP didnt **** this all up there wouldnt be this situation...

Post 39

Exectly. People will say that Australian marajuana is better quality, so yes there is money in selling it in Indonesia. That is a half-truth. Generally it is better quality, however, there is far more money to be made selling it here, than over there. The risks, efforts and costs involved in taking it to Bali would far outweigh the amount you could sell it for, when you could sell it here for just as much.

Baggage handlers have been involved in this for ages. AFP didn't pick it up. So Corby loses. Poor girl.

Its all over the Tv because it has the most effect without being involved in the actuall law procedings, its the only voice for schapelle and her family when the gov't doesnt give 2 ****s. Nor does any Indonesians.
Its a very biased case.
If you were in her situation, you would just cop it on the chin and be ass ****ed for the next 20 years?
Spending 7 months already in a Bawanese prison and then being told you have to spend another 20years in there, I would not blame her for being in the suicidal frame of mind.

Post 41

it's a sovereign countries judicial system, they have every right to do it their way, and so they have.

don't like the way their system works? don't go there.

Post 42

I never will. Of course they can do it their way. Doesn't mean I'm not allowed to have an opinion about it. It's a joke of a system that has no concept of human rights. I hope you never get caught up in it, Paladin, along with every other person on the planet.

Post 43

Quote from hawkeye:
Even though majority of Aust believe she is innocent?

irrelevant. the indonesians seem to think she's guilty, and it's a case being tried in indonesia. what australia thinks means shit all, just the way it should be.

Quote from hawkeye:

i'm quite sure that the media exposure here has cemented in the minds of the judges to do things their way, and any thoughts they had of clemency would have been washed away by external pressure. that's just the way people react - the more you're being told to do something by people who have no business telling you that - the more likely you are to dig your heels in and refuse.

Quote from hawkeye:
Its a very biased case.
yes. it is. because its two different cultures, two different judicial systems. guess who's opinion matters? theirs, not ours.

no, i'd be doing absolutely everything possible to try and get out of it, but it's not me, and it's not someone i care about, so i can be a lot more rational about it.

i can also promise you that if i ever go over there again, i'll be taking a lot of cover my ass measures to ensure it does not happen to me.

Post 44

"i can also promise you that if i ever go over there again, i'll be taking a lot of cover my ass measures to ensure it does not happen to me."

Kinda sad thats its taken a 20 year sentence for a likely innocent woman to make ppl think like that. I can guarentee you wouldnt have thought much about the issue before this. :)

Post 45

i've been overseas exactly once, when i was ten years old, i was hardly in a position to care about it then

refer to my earlier post about luggage checking at an airport, that's a thought i've had for quite a few years now, paranoia is rarely a bad thing.

Post 46

Personally I think she is innocent. I agree that the increased risk for a lower pay off is pretty dumb...if she WAS selling it, she'd have done it at home. They said that the indonesian legal system is "Innocent until proven Guilty" but I can say from first hand experience thats nothing more than a couple of words, there is no truth in it. Apparently Alexander Downer has 2 QC's working on her appeal now...a bit f**ken late if you ask me, but better late than never.

The whole thing is a big charade for the media to show "Look what happens when you smuggle drugs here". They don't care about the case or her or whats true/false, all they care about is the political statement and the example that they can make of her.

Post 48

I wonder if she was innocent or guilty. I guess we will never know, just like the Chamberlin baby and dingo case.

She was trialed in Indonesia, under Indonesian law and their laws are different. They (the 3 judges) seamed to think she was guilty so well they gave her a sentence. If she was innocent its truly bad luck. But I guess we will never know.

Post 49

When I last (and only time) visited Bali, we queued for immigration there, at which point, they'd have specific lines for specific planes. We were about 5 people back when suddenly they decided that the queue would now be for people from another airline, and all people who'd been waiting had to join another line.

Post 50

Hey, at least its not life, 20 years is a long time yeah.. but fck id rather 20 over life. At least in the end I will be allowed to go free and enjoy life again. Who knows she'll probably a lot richer after Jail with all the craze with this case.

rich or not, she'll always be known as schapelle who allegedly smuggled 4kgs of pot and got jailed for it. money wouldnt mean dick, she's lost her life...

Post 53

That and she wont be out until shes 47....I highly doubt she is going to be able to spend 20 years in a bali prison and be able to continue her life/start a new life when she finally DOES get out.

Post 54

I dont think she's lost her life.. really couldn't care less if she tried to traffic drugs or not, personally its only pot lol.. do yous really care? lol Shit the drug isnt that bad.. im not saying its a good thing, just saying it could have been worse lol.

Yeah well 20 years at that age is kinda a loss of your life I suppose, but its not the end of the world.

Post 55

I don't see her surviving 20 years in Indonesian prison.

Im not saying that in terms of the sentence, yes I accept their laws of life for drugs.. I've been to a couple asian countries and I now all too well the laws regarding drugs. Hell to be the best of my knowloedge its illegal to traffic it from and to any country.

What im saying is when she gets back home, when she is free.. I personally couldnt care less about what she did.. if I think she was innocent I am allowed to say who cares it was only pot.. Not like she got anywhere with it anyway. Hell the drug isnt that bad, if it was something much more dangerous, say extasy or something, then sure I can maybe start to understand the real problems here.

But god its pot.. shit cigerettes are worse then it for fck sake.. thats all im trying to say. (ok maybe not short term, but yeah you get the idea)

Yes she got caught, yes she was proven guilty, yes it was wrong to do what she might have done, yes it was pretty pointless trying to take it into the country in the first place, yes I respect the rules of their country, no I wont ever try to do it myself, but damn..I wouldnt give a toss about her and her life sentence when she back here. She was caught, she done her time, thats it.

Post 58

that pot is worse than tabbac is debatable and the issue will never be resolved.

anyways I DONT RESPECT THEIR LAWS, the government of indonesia cant get us down by supporting terrorists, hence attacks like the sari club targeting australians so they make skape goat out of people like schapelle corby. whether she did it or not it was not a fair trial.

everyone lock their bags when going overseas,

and the fact it was pot is irrelevant, it may as well of been heroine, it is an illicit drug and is treated as such. hell she may be guilty, doesnt matter as either way their justice system failed.

as for the media the best thing they can do is send richard carlton to report in iraq in the thick of the fighting. do us all a favour!

Post 59

Anybody see that report on Today/tonite?

Post 63

my teachers daughter was at the trial... she was 1 of the people that helped fund raise for the bali bombing 2

Post 64

and that brings credibility to your statement?

i didnt hear much about a boyfriend, the people involved in her case from what i saw was ron bakir, her mum, ill dad, her sister mercedes and her husband, brother michael. from what i know, she's got another brother still in prison.

news.com.au suggested that she'll have to spend 5 years atleast in an indo prison, even if any bilateral prisoner exchange agreements were made

Post 65

Meh on my way to London not long ago I locked my bag, the funny thing was when I got to London, the lock was gone. Yeah worried me at first cos I thought someone might have been through it, but nothing was missing and nothing bad was there, so yeah. If you do lock it, just make sure you use a decent lock.

No one can go through your baggage without your permission, I believe. They will call you to search it. When I got back into Darwin from Spain I had food on me so I went through Customs and got my stuff searched. The lady there asked me to put my things on the table, then 1 at a time open the pockets/zips up. She then had a quick look through asked me a few questions like where Id been, what I did, if I had any more food (other then what I showed her) and stuff like that, all was fine I knew I could take the stuff into Australia, just had to make sure :p

I know its not really relavent, so dont kill me.

Post 66

In the US they can go through it without permission. On Getaway on Thursday night they recommended buying this really good lock if you want ot go to the US where every US customs centre has a 'master key' for it.

And, as cow said, afaik she doesn't have a boyfriend... it would have been mentioned several hundred times a day if she had.

Post 67

Post 69

teachers know everything, didnt you know?

Post 70

Yeah travelling in the US sucks. They search your bags every flight (because you aren't a US citizen) and leave a little note. It says thanks for cooperating or something but what it really means is "Your our bitch and don't you forget it". Also, whenever you go through security, be prepared for a pat-down, they do it to all foreigners. It was kind of disgusting really, they say that it's random but I didn't see one asian or middle-eastern person (US citizen or not) not get checked, and white people (US citizens I mean) all breezed through. This was a few months after 9/11 though so it has probably calmed down since then.

Post 77

Well they say its random. When it's clearly not. I saw American business men (clearly American citizen, proper id, accent, etc), who were being handled pretty roughly by the security, on the border of being abused, just because they were of asian origin. That's what I thought was disgusting.

Post 78

They must have enough evidence on her to make her guilty.

Anyhow im just pissed at the media, australian people are in the wrong all the time because some ****wit aussie doesnt read up on the internal laws of other countries. Only this time its a young buety student, wonder how this effect queensland, do they really need that student? :D

Anyhow i didnt see any special reports on channel 7, 9 or 10 about david hicks, or the that was found with a small amount of heroin in vietnam. Bias ****ing reporting. **** her hope she tops herself when they give her life or the death squad at her appeal. PAZ AM ANGRY!

If they're handled roughly, that's clearly wrong, especially since the vast majority of people being frisked are completely innocent. However, I doubt it's actual policy to do so, more likely you have poorly paid airport security staff who feel the need to assert their authority in an unprofessional manner.

Post 81

Lets just think about this for a minute ....

Who "planted" the dope in her bag ? - baggage handlers ? - maybe, but why ? if the dope is worth more here than there why would they send it in a supposedly innocent persons luggage ?

If the dope and luggage had arrived safely - ie dope undetected - what would happen then ? - is this an allegedly international gang with corresponding "corrupt" baggage handlers at the other end to whisk away the dope ? - then what do they do with it ? cost more to buy in Oz than can be recouped in Bali

Once again it comes back to why smuggle a load of dope worth more at its source than, in this case, its destination ?

No I think she did the crime and now must do the time. Given she has been there several times before and was well aware ( as most intelligent people are ) of the penalties for dealing in drugs she is either very stupid or over confidentily arragant that she could get away with it.

I guess the thought of having 4kg's of dope to blow on holidays was too much to resist.

Post 82

I dont know if you've ever smoked weed man, but 4kgs...thats not a holiday, thats a ****en marathon.

There's obviously a reason for it to go to Indonesia.
Why else would it be in the bag? If she has it, she has it because shes smuggling it. If someone else put it there, they put it there to smuggle it.

She didnt take 4kgs of dope, for personal use while on holidays :|

Post 83

Reminds me of a song.

TRICKY .. Change Tricky too GUILTY and u get a new song in the making.

Post 84

From what I understand, Indonesia was never the intended destination, IF indeed it had been planted by baggage handlers.

Supposedly it was planted in Sydney, meant to be removed in Brisbane, but forgotten for some weird and wonderful reason.
