yeah, the 2005 version is quite different from the original one.
as I understand it, this version is supposed to be more in tune with Roald Dahl's vision of the book
Well its shit compared to the first one..
plain and simple.
They made willy wonka a weirdo .. I prefered the original
Hahaha wonka is a classic i loved the new movie.
I liked the original better but let me make this clear. It was in no way, shape or form Johnny Depp's fault and if anyone ever says anything remotely mean about him I will hunt you down and kill you. JD can have my babies. The stupid writers made it stupid and uncool.
I thought it wasn't bad. Some stupidity, yes... but as I read the book before ever seeing the first movie this was definitely closer to how I originally pictured it - so I enjoyed it more.
I slept through it at the cinema.
I was woken by the missus to watch (and potentially sing) with the Oompa Loompas but was SADLY disappointed.
Gheyest.
Oompa.
Loompas.
Ever.
I thought it was quite good, in reflection to the actual book.
The original movie was way off and just way too jolly.
Yeah i really liked the more sinister Wonka this time around.
Definately more funny than the original movie; and much closer to the book from what i can remember of it.
Its Willie Wonka its supposed to be weird.
GREAT MOVIE
Quite brilliant I thought - but then I don't have an old fashioned redneck approach to life...

YOUR DREAMING !!!
Keep telling yourself that OD :-D
I'm dreaming I'm dreaming.... Cool! So people like Hawk DON'T exist - phew....
So unseen has never read the book I take it..
ugh that movie used to scare me :O *hides*
Haven't seen the new one..
lol
I loved the new movie so much.
Sure the oompa loompa's weren't the best but JD was brilliant as Willy Wonka.
I think that strangeness made it more true to the original novel than the previous movie.
I actually have read the novel ..
however I still prefered the first movie.
Firstly, let me say, I've never read the book, I honestly don't plan to.
I think, a reason for people to prefer the original over this one, is the lack of interaction between the two worlds... The Wonka factory didn't really relate to the outside world, the outside world didn't really relate to the inside world. I'm not sure of how the book portrays the relationship, but there it is. Conciously, it's not something that makes a difference. This is the same feeling people would get from watching the Wizard of Oz, or Alice in Wonderland.
The new movie, blurs, in fact, removes these borders... It extends the 'magic' of wonka land into the real world. This isn't the problem in itself, otherwise many people wouldn't like Harry Potter... What does cause the problem is that there's no explanation for it... There's no effort to hide it.
Personally I thought it was brilliant. Far from Johnny Depps worst role. I felt the portrayal of the characters was excellent, more, in tune with the modern world. I found the depth in the explanations far more entertaining, and I do enjoy how they villanise the Wonker character a little, and explore the way he is the way he is.
The movie itself felt deeper, more judgemental of the world.
As for the Oompa Loompa's (or the one guy really) I never really liked them a whole lot, but it still made for an enjoyable experience, and would have been missing without them.
I must say the opening scene where they're all welcomed into the factory was an absolute crack up, and the nice touch with the 'hospital for puppets' later on.

Compared to the original... it's different, I still enjoy the original quite a bit, but Charlie and hit Grandfather were just a little too 'Stiff upper lip' and stereotyped for my liking. Gene Wilder was excellent though. The difference between Wonka's, Gene was an almost scarey person, Johnny was more excentric.
Example... The scene where tubby is sucked up from the Chocolate river... Depp seems almost excitedly preoccupied. Wilder was more 'too bad so sad, oh what, you want me to do something? Well, I can't teach your boy to not be a obnoxious little fart, besides, he won't be a problem now anyway, lets continue' attitude.
