Fishing?? Dont mention fishing. This weekend is our annual charter weekend, 2 folks flew in from interstate today, and two more in the next two days. At least the lads driving up from Katherine can cancel at the last minute, but we've invested more than ten grand on a 4 day trip that doesn't look like happening.

looking at front page map, by 23rd its not even impacting darwin yet so i dont think DGA would be affected (but postponing it would be good for me, my comp is on backorder)
but remember that a lot of the DGA officials are older than those attending and have other responsibilities at home and work (as in IT professionals bagging PCs :cry: and home owners securing their homes and families) so there is a lot more to consider.. not just 50pcs being blown away at the greek school.

I figured that by Sunday arvie the up-early-and-at-'em crowd would have been and gone. There might be another rush tonight if the TV news is bad. I expect panic buying to be well underway by tomorrow afternoon, especially since lots of people were going to call in sick.

Hahaha just spoke to my brother in Gove... just said they're like 80kms from the eye of the storm.. and they've got bugger all wind. In fact, he and their neighbours are sitting on their back verandahs having BBQs. Champions. Says they have only had spitting rain the last few hours. the trees are moving a bit, but less than most storms.

OK folks... been bored this afternoon (day off) and while waiting between updates, decided to put together a site where people could easily send photos, sat shots, radar images, etc of the cyclone. If as many of you as possible register up and add some images to it, that would rock. It would be great if we could be known as the home of monica photo's (image the google searches to get that).
Either way, add something to it so it doesn't seem like all my work was in vain :)

It will have to be a direct hit to do much damage going by my bro's comments on the phone earlier. This cyclone is tiny. Dont forget, most houses here are built for this stuff now. The requirements in the cyclone code added after tracy, my grandad already had in his house and it survived with 0 damage (his pool was a different story, heap of cars in it :P )
Cape Wessel is an automatic weather station near nhulunbuy. Last recorded wind data was 130km/h winds... CONSTANT.. not gusts, gusts would be near 180+.
Cape is no longer reporting data, missed the last update, could be a comms failure or the cyclone has actually taken it out.
EDIT: If the picture should go down or change as of 2006-04-24T12:38:25+9:30 the picture shows the cyclone heading for Darwin and right into Darwin on the 25th.
EDIT2: Oh and this weatherzone post says that the prediction on the map is still a cat 5.
At the moment no, school and work is not closed. I view this as a mistake as it would allow more time for people to get ready but oh well. It seems it wont hit till late tuesday sometime wednesday anyway.

A CYCLONE WARNING is now current for coastal and island communities between CAPE WESSEL and DALY RIVER MOUTH, including DARWIN, the TIWI ISLANDS, COBOURG PENINSULA and JABIRU.
A CYCLONE WATCH extends southwest between DALY RIVER MOUTH and PORT KEATS.
The CYCLONE WARNING between NHULUNBUY and CAPE WESSEL has been cancelled.
At 7 am CST SEVERE TROPICAL CYCLONE Monica CATEGORY 5 was located about 80 kilometres north of ELCHO ISLAND, 180 kilometres northwest of NHULUNBUY and 520 kilometres east northeast of DARWIN, moving west at 13 kilometres per hour. The cyclone will move further west and closer to the coast later today. The cyclone is then expected to weaken slightly as it passes over the COBOURG PENINSULA tonight, but will still be a SEVERE TROPICAL CYCLONE as it moves across the northwest DARWIN-DALY and TIWI ISLANDS area during Tuesday.
The VERY DESTRUCTIVE core of SEVERE TROPICAL CYCLONE Monica with gusts to 350 kilometres per hour is currently affecting the islands off the northeast Arnhem Land coast and is expected to cross the north coast between MANINGRIDA and CROKER ISLAND later today, and approach DARWIN-DALY and TIWI ISLAND area on Tuesday afternoon.
DESTRUCTIVE WINDS with gusts to 160 kilometres per hour are currently being experienced on the remaining islands about the northeast Arnhem Land coast, and should extend further west to CAPE DON by tonight.
GALES with gusts to 100 kilometres per hour are currently being experienced on the northeast Arnhem Land coast, and will extend westward ahead of the cyclone, reaching the northwest DARWIN-DALY and TIWI ISLANDS area on Tuesday morning.
DANGEROUSLY HIGH TIDES could cause EXTENSIVE FLOODING at the coast between NHULUNBUY and ELCHO ISLAND this morning, extending westwards to GOULBURN ISLAND later today.

If Darwin gets hit, the office will stay powered, the building should run for like 4 weeks under it's own steam or something, and those windows have steel shutters above them, so theoretically, the webcam should stay up the whole time.

Ah sorry, yeah 30 seconds :) found my wife's logitech clicksmart, if i have to go back into work today, will try to take it in and hook it up on another machine looking out the side window (can see the big stupid billboard up near daily street bridge through that - surely the first to go as the winds pick up)
