god that looks nice :) the new alloytec engines are nice 3.6 litre and spark plugs have a life span of 120,000 km, buying a v8 atm would be crazy i think fuel prices are mad not to mention insurance
Yeh I'd stay away from the V8's, they are only necessary for peen factor. With the way fuel is these days and the style of most peoples driving, a V6 is the more common-sense approach (other than a 2ltr ofcourse, but only drinks should be bought in that size) =)
my choice would be a BA XR6 turbo. why? i've read lots and lots of reviews, and everyone rates them very highly, handle well for a falcon, and that engine, wow, out of the box performance, and i know they take VERY well to modifications
2003-2004 models are going to around the 26k mark on average
rex, well, i'd get a rex over those cars, but thats just me, and u dont seem to be a rex sorta guy.
stay away from 300ZX....theyre getting old, engines are hard to modify, and they handle like whales
Burk goggo cars are far to small for my height other wise i would thought about it :p thanks for your input even tho it wasnt really funny or in any help
Driven xr6 turbo, Loved it (an im not a ford fan but i love it) Handles well and drift pretty good to hahaha.
Luv the imports http://prestigemotorsport.com.au/ fords yes specially if your looking at xr6 wrx yep there awsome even if everyone has one. 1-nissan - toyota 2-subaru 3-mitubashiti 4-ford 5-holden http://www.prestigemotorsport.com.au/modules/stock/index.php?StockID=3990 nice supra
Mazda 6 / Mazda 3 Sp23 - both 2.3l engines, but the Mazda 3 GOES.. Mazda 6 runs only on premium, Mazda 3 takes both. Very nice looking cars, new interior etc.
stick with the aussies korny, Commo or XR. :) but remember if you are buying brand new XR's and SS's cost 30k+, then you have to think about the other costs, including fuel. even a 6 cylinder. with a turbo it may as well be a v8 :p
why you would want to spend $26000 on a car is beyond me. i'd rather spend $6,000 and put the $20,000 towards a deposit on a house. but thats just me :p
Quote from Korny: or i could pay "6,000 for an alloytec commodore an have a new car LOL.. i love old cars but after the experience i've had with them no more old cars.
imports are nice :S but i dunno if i should go for an import :) worth a look thanks
Seriously, with that sort of cash you could have an car builder go over and upgrade EVERYTHING and rewire the whole car. No chance of a problem.
Supra would be my second choice, tough as nails - very nice engines witha lot of potential and they dont break down.
I've got to agree with Mymatsu on this one, I picked up a really mistreated LH Torana recently and they do take a lot of work but with that amount of cash you could get the thing professionaly built into a realy nice car for much less than your limit and use they excess cash to feed the hungry V8.
Seriously though if your paying anything in the region of 20k, (an absolute fourtune when you think about it) for a car, why should you get anything less than 450 brake horse power? I cant quite recall the quarter times for these newer cars, but if you drop that much cash into a Torana (or any Falcon/Charger from the same time period for that matter) then they really don't stand a chance. You would also be driving something much more unique and better looking than anything on offer today, and you would be preforming a National service to Australia by helping to insure the proud heritage of the Australian Muscle car is properly preserved.
Or, you could buy a xr6 turbo BA, a favoured choice for both the bored upper class housewife to collect the kids from school, and the balding middle management white collar burocrate suffering from a mid-life crisis.
The rediculous torque of the V8 compels you! Don't resist, don't listen to these naysayers with thier "resonable fuel economy", in a Classic Australian Muscle car every Litre of 98 octane gasoline that beutiful V8 guzzles is an absolute joy to behold, and worth every cent.
Quote from Milenko: I see no sense in spending that kind of money on such an old vehicle. No manufacturers warranty and in my view, less comfort =)
Good thing about doing up an old car vs buying a new one - its the same as building your own PC, heaps better than a mass produced one but instead of just one warranty the parts have their own warranty. Example - Ross Racing will custom make a set of pistons for $750 to suit what you plan to do. If the piston breaks and takes out your engine whilst operating under conditions they were designed for, they will replace the whole motor.
As for comfort, get some decent seats put in and personally I like the non "Plastic extend to the doors and roof and everything overkill dash board of doom" in modern cars. I drive an LX Torana and it has the most basic and simple dash and I can't think of anything other than cruise control I'd want to add to it.
Another added plus, with everything being plastic crap now days a good old steel car will survive some P-Plater in his fulleh sick Hyundai smacking into you. Its a bit of money yes, but much less than buying a new car and as long as you have someone do all the work for you (because let's face it, with $26k why wouldn't you) everything is warrantied. You don't even have to go a V8, I got the details and specs of every part to make a 450 - 500 HP Holden 6. Comes to around $8k to $9k of engine/gearbox/diff.
Finally, a car 30 years or older lets you insure through Shannon's Insurance, cheaper than most insurance companies and they ONLY do classic cars. They also insure for an agreed value based on any modifications etc.
i thought about spending "2,000 on cummings Modded engine 4.6 litre v6 with stroker kit for my vs but in the end of the day its still vs and at the end of the year if i dont want it ill sell it to someone who will only offer me $6000 for the car its not worth it
Korny, considering your business you should just buy some little ricebubble on wheels that is cheap and efficient to run. Spend about 6k and put the rest of the money in the bank and save for a house or something.
My brother earns a reasonable salary, has this massive plasma tv, loud stereo, all the latest toys, a HSV commodore (VY or something) and just bought a Nissan Z or something like that. At the end of the day he has nothing in the bank while he pays off/runs all this crap.
He wonders why he can never save enough money for a home loan deposit, hell how is he ever going to be able to afford the repayments anyway???
Here's a pic of one I found thanks to my good friends at google image search. I don't know how they rate compared to other performance cars speed-wise etc. But I just love the shape of them they are super sexy.
But yeah, back on topic. I second the call for an el cheapo fuel efficient car. <3 my girly astra, sooo cheap to run and it gets me from A to B.
300zx are about of of the best handiliing cars ever if you don't know that you have never driven one. and they arn't that hard to modify if you know what your doing :P
whilst Xr6t are good they have there flaws the BA suffer from shoddy brakes and a very shite house gearbox that is always going to give you headaches. i think these problems where rectifiied in the BF.
VY~VZ commies are good but there commies and never really hold there value over time. but Alloytec FTW. the new clubbies and ss's where suposed to come out with an option to turn of four cylinders when you you want economy. but there not anymore :(
the most important thing to remeber when buying a car is what you want the thing for. if you want it for proformance you can't go past jap cars. they own all.
32, 33 ,34 skylines are awsome and can be had for as cheap as 10k (32) AND 1J powered toyotas are good.
anyway everyone has there own opinions just some ppl are more informed than others.

buying a ricebubble like you bought is alright but after the amount of money i spent on my car in the past 2 months its not worth it, "400 to do the top end and then have it spin the bearings on the crank, i just spent another shitload buying new engine for it i'll fix it and sell it off and buy a new car i dont even wanna waste my time with unreliable cars, i looked after that car but for some reason it was a lemon.
But on a serious note. I drove shitboxes for about 4 years. While they get you from A-B and are cheap to run, theres alot of downsides. As the big K mentioned, the price involved when the old boiler shits itself good and proper. When i bought my 'new' car, i bought something i enjoyed driving and looked forward to getting behind the while of. Personal choice plays a large factor and in some aspects, we always buy with our heart ;)
Oh I don't mean shitbox, I meant get a new small fuel efficient car. My astra is only a year or two old and it's awesome. Cheap to insure, cheap to run, cheap to repair when some tard backed into it in a parking lot and didn't leave a note. It's not even that girly cause it's a 4 door model with the proper boot, none of that 2 door hatchback gayness. I don't understand why people buy bigger cars unless they have a family or a need for it, just wastes money imo.
Reason I bought my Torana is personal choice. It's my dream car and while it's a shitbox now it's in very good condition and is totally original everything. Original motor - virgin bore - done 1.2million km's. Its pretty rough but it's fairly reliable and I plan to fix it up and never buy another car again.

bigger cars to boost your e-peen :D
It is a personal preference - i drive a 2dr lancer but own a WB panelvan and a 350 chev - its more for fun that a daily driver though - my wife didnt really understand that point suggesting i sell my lancer to fund the van build and use that to get to work and back.......
I guess I'm more referring to people who drive 4wds when the closest they've been to taking it offroad is going over speedbumps and small children. Or people buy utes but don't use them as a ute. What's with these new 4wd utes anyway. Those hilux type ones. Why would you get one of those rather than a normal size ute? They look way more expensive to buy and run, do they even 4wd that well compared to proper 4wd (I wouldn't know I don't know shit about cars). They are blatently for epeen factor, so many people who drive those things tailgate and speed and change lanes without indicating.
/rant
In conclusion I forgot what I was talking about. But yeah, unless you got the cash to get a car you really like or you have some other need I still reckon little cars pwn.
yeh i dont understand why people would buy a hilux or big 4 wheel drive then put a $5000 pair of mags on it and never take it off road "****ing idiots" i was seriously looking at an astra i think i might go test drive 1 next few days

i parked my jackeroo on the nature strip once......it was cool :p
i park my commodore on the nature strip ive taken my comm off road before " a dirt road that is not exactly 4 wheel drive area but never the less its probably done more then your jackeroo :P

If U are looking at an Astra then also look at the Mazda 3 nice car and better than the astra IMO :)
Yeah dude, mazda 3 > astra. I got my astra in 2004 just before mazda 3's came out, otherwise I'd have a 3 instead. My mum drives one atm, they are nicer and roomier on the inside. I've been told that astra's aren't built to last though I haven't had any problems with it so far. The astra is a tiny bit quicker off the mark but if thats a problem get the sp23 mazda 3, they go hard for a little car.

I reckon they'd do 4WD pretty well actually. I've got a 94 hilux and would love to trade it in on one of those new flash ones, only problem is I'd be too scared to take it off-road in case I scratched it.... With my old one I take it anywhere, dont have to worry about scratches or dents, and know it'll get me out of most places I take it. It's a gutless old 2.8 diesel but it's towed/winched/snatched many cars out of places they shouldn't have gone. If you want a good all-round 4wd buy a hilux or a cruiser.
Those RAV4 things tho are just for posers. Get one of them bogged and it deserves to stay there, as a testament and warning to others..... Leave it in the mud for a week then torch it.

Yeah the SP23 Go's hard and handles very well, very good cornering :D, I currently have one, was the first person in darwin to buy one just so happened the weekend I went looking for a new car mazda had just put these babies on the lot :). After taking one for a test drive I was very inpresed and ordered one :), and have no trouble with it at all.
Was gonna trade it in on a new one but now Mazda are releasing the Mazda3 MPS later this year am now lookin at that :)

Yeah, a mate of mine has a sp23 and it is all kinds of awesome I never expected from a little car.
Also another random car question, why do people buy imports to do them up for racing? I mean wouldn't doing up a new/old v8 be much faster? My old man has his car leased through work so he always has the latest hsv (the bogan), currently in the new clubsport with the 6.0L engine, wouldn't that put ricer cars to shame? Are they the best bang for buck when it comes to doing cars up or is it all in the image?

ps. serious question
Tard from what i have seen, imports can be best bang for buck, but it depends what you want out of it..
Lets say me and you had 20k each to buy and do up a car. You take your new/old v8.. i take my import. I guarantee i could make a faster car.
Quote from outofammo: golf GTI or mazda 6 mps. i think the new 3mps is only going to be FWD :(
Yes FWD, 185-195KW :), They have introduced a system to stop torque steer, every thing i've read about it sounds like a real ball tearer, I belive the golf GTI is FWD aswell, as its the car they are saying the 3MPS is gonna kill :)

Minorci I think getting a lil 2 fast & 2 furious ... for 20k you can get a second hand corolla with air or something like this for cheaper ... VVVVV :) [Image: http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y129/mymatsu/1277150.jpg]

HSV= 65K+ skyline GTR R32= 25K+ hmmmm which one will i pick. the slugish sailing boat or the refined awd monster. I'm not trying to be biased cuase i love my 8's but the GTR is in a leauge all of it's own it's like a supercar without the supercar pricetag. the greatest car ever built IMO (as far as money for proformance goes.) BTW i have driven the new R8 VZ clubbie very nice, LS2 are great especially if you bolt a turbo on them. just don't floor it if you only have less than 1/4 of a tank of fuel. you will run out :(

sweet, be intersting to see how the control the touque steer when it comes on full boost.

How old are you kids? ... Holden GTR far Superior than Captain Japan's ... for 25k you could build 5.7ltr efi Torrie and then proceed to eat Skyline. Sorry kid.
lol, V8's arent about speed anymore, turbo'd 4 cylinder's can produce more power these days (when compared to aussie cars anyway, european cars no)
but there is one thing i do know, if i buy a V8 now, it'll still work 10 years from now, a skyline wont. that and it sounds and feels ten times better.
and plus, having a skyline was great 10 years ago when no one had one. now every want-to-be has one.

Not my prob buddy if you can’t move past your Bogan motors, I’m sorry but it's just common knowledge that japs build better engines. Holden are still using push rods for Christ sake. Holden just pile on the cubes to compensate. I only need 2.6 ltr’s to blow your 5.7 ltr’s torrie out of the water
you can put a 5.7ltr in a torrie but at then end of the day it is still a torrie and it's handling is still going to be some what questionable.
My god 32's where built in 1989 and Holden still haven’t built anything that can compete. learn your history Group A.
and despite what you think I am no kid and I can assure you my knowledge of cars probably runs far deeper than your's so before you get yourself into an argument just step back buddy. Not trying to put aussie cars down as I happen to be a great fan of them (me and my old man are looking at getting a very nice FC Ute and doing it up mmm 350 SC goodness). It’s just that sometimes ppl need to understand that there are better thing out there.

my skyline is still going strong and its almost 20 years old. but i do agree V8's sound the money and that mountian of torque, love it.
Actually a Torana can be made to handle very well with minimal effort as they had good handling to start with. Also consider power to weight, I can guarantee V8 Torana with 500+ HP and 600+ ftlbs of torque has much better power to weight than a Skyline. Yes Holden need to get with the times, pushrod motors are pretty lame in this day and age.
However I can guarantee I can build a Torana that goes faster and handles better than a $25k Skyline.

is that a bet buddy? ps. the torrie has to ba able to turn. and in case you didn't know GTR's are AWD so you can have all the horse power you want you just wont be able to use it properly. you obvisouly know nothing about skylines or jap cars in general so don't make claims like those above.
and yes skylines are faster than HSV's factory 1/4 mile times say this.
"my two thousand dollar RX3 capella shell with 23 thousand worth of mods will beat your 25k skyline, or my worked VZ GTO will kill your ferrari"
it's a stupid fkn comment, i love all these guys here working up their e-peens with their car knowledge, same shit guys, different tastes.
at the end of the day, i drive a corolla which gets me 500kms to the 36ltr tank, it beats stock commodores and fords through the twisties, and i fkn love it. by driving an average car, i have money to put to other avenues (ie investments). so wouldnt you say i was the smarter one at the end of the day?

I do know GTR's are AWD and I do know the Torana needs to be able to turn. I know for a fact with minimal work a Torana can be setup to handle like it's on rails. Mainly because it's a well balanced and light car. The GTR has a definate advantage with AWD as it has extra traction off the mark and has wheels driving it around corners as opposed to just being pushed. However AWD are mroe prone to understeer than a RWD but nothing that either cant be setup to compensate for.
The GTR will launch a bit quicker but I can gaurantee that with the right setup and traction on the back wheels of the Torana it won't have a chance short of the intial launch. A V8 will have a crapola more torque meaning it can push a higher gear ratio with the same amount of revs as the GTR at the same climb in rev speed. 2 engines spinning the same speed with one with a higher ratio, guess who will win? I'll give you a hint, it's not made in Japan.
It all comes down to traction and power/weight at the wheels. And don't say a rear driver can't be setup to plant that traction down, because it can, and it's not expensive.
Quote from Cow: by driving an average car, i have money to put to other avenues (ie investments). so wouldnt you say i was the smarter one at the end of the day?
bah.
What people do with their money is their own perogative. We spend 1/3rd of our life in bed. Would you buy a cheap ass bed so you can put your money elsewhere, or would you buy a great bed to get a good night's sleep, cos you like sleeping and spend a good deal of time in bed?
Some people like cars, and get enjoyment from spending money to upgrade, some people like to invest and then spend the money when they're too old to fully enjoy it. Some people have money for both.

heh you're right there, at the government car auctions i went to have a look and the corolla's and hatchbacks are the same price as the fords and holdens because everyone wants a small car that does good km's to the litre, no one really wants a big arse sedan anymore.
but still, boys will be boys, there is nothing better than a really fast car...but imho they cost way to much money for me to have now. im going to buy my supercars when im retiring with my millions :P and do nothing but drive around the world :)

FTO's are lancer drivers wannabe supra's, and supra's are crap! and the skylines are way to over exited. there not as good as people make them out to be!
i've lost almost ten thousand bucks to cars in the last few years, doesnt sound like a huge amount, but im only 20, and still a full time uni student
i love my cars, and have loved skylines since i was....14, and would love to own a nice brand spanking new gtr z-tune :)
saying that though, i LOVE old school mustangs, particularly the USDM '69 fastback.
my realistic car, which i intend to buy when im in a fulltime job, is the new mark5 golf GTi....pure sex.
i've had the car debate a million times with my mates, and its the exact same argument as on here. at the end of the day, its preference. i mean, wrathlon's love of torries are an obvious sign of his liking for men, but i dont discriminate do i? kidding maaaaate :)

FTO..its a like it or hate it car, fairly weak, 2ltr V6, but even the mivec's go well. lancers...ever heard of an evo fq330, or the newer fq400?
supras...old supras, like the mark3 with the 7mgte's, was gonna buy one of those, theyd suprise you with power and handling. new supras, find me an engine as versatile as the 2JZ-GTE, theyve got more potential in them than the RB26 from the GTRs
as for skylines, taking my bias away, are still the god of japanese motorsport. in australia - group a dominance anyone?

can understand your opinion, i can see you must be like 10 so it all makes sense. no one likes sil80's they are like the two works parts of the 180 and the silva put together. onevia is what you want buddy. and the 7m is the biggest POS proformance motor toyota ever made. even the 1g wasn't that great. but all was forgiven with the 1&2 j's my god what engines.
drive an evo or a gsr, or even go for a ride in one then tell me they arn't worth spit. and as for skylines being over rated you don't stay at the top for nothing.
and whilst i love to arguee with bogans all day about cars it just gets plain boring besides i like my 8's just as much as my turbo'd 6's. sounds like a few of you know your cars well and i hope to see you donw at the track sometime in the future.
Mini clubman renault (crap) 3 differant mazda's (older models) XA ford 308 (my dads old car) 64 chev (my granfather gave me this when i turned 15, i sold it when i was 16) 2 corollers (good little runabouts) a ford telstar (wasn't so bad) ford laser old schoo; astra (crap) oh and my present car a 1982 alfa romeo gtv. (lovely car, but way to expensive)
i dont like to many newer cars.... love the old skool.. fastback mustangs also (but who doesn't)!
i have driven .. sil80 (awsome car) S13/14 (lovely) GSR (ok this car i dont hate but i wouldn't want one, i'll admit they look nicer than the lancers too) EVO 7 (the worst car i've ever drivein) 180sx (didn't like the feel of it, or the look of the front end, nice rear tho)(hence the likeing of the SIL80) 200sx (not to bad) 300zx (god this car sucked) 260z (datsun this car is ace) skyline r33 (nice enuff but still dont like the look) and a few not even worth mentioning
and obviously the ones mentioned above that i owned!
