Meet him a couple of times when he was up here shotting, prior to him becoming as well reconized in Aus as he was in the US nice bloke. Sad to see him die so young leaving a young family behind. He did alot for tourism and conservation, and dispite what you think of his actions on TV he was realy just another ausie lariken(sic). Well it isn't poisoned as such, but its coated in some nasty stuff. Basically for a trauma such as that its a big ****ing no no to pull it out, it would prompt more bleeding and do a lot more dmg - especially since the barb is serrated like a steak knife. In the first aid course they basically advise you to bandage up around the protruding object and wound and get to hospital quickly :P

I didn't respect him and I do not lightly speak ill of the dead, but I'm not going to change my view now that he's dead.
Condolences to his family, for sure... I would never take that away.

Regardless of any personal opinions on the man the undeniable facts are as follows.
1. He was an Australian Tall Poppy
2. He was the biggest tourism advertisement for Australia ever. He far surpased Paul Hogan.
3. He did more for Australian conservation than many know, millions into different organisations funds etc etc.
4. He has been a house hold name in the USA for many years. His syndicated cable show The Croc Hunter aired in the US many years ago because the Australian television moguls were not interested.
5. He could do no wrong in the US and around the world but here in Australia he was seen as a loud larriken Aussie. We tend to hold our own who make it precariously at the top so that when they fall they fall hard.
So what ever your individual views on the man are you cannot deny the impact he has had as an Australian.
My 9 year old daughter's class wrote letters of condolence to his children and to Australia Zoo, this has hapened throughout many schools in Australia and throughout the world. He made an impact in many lives.
We are all entitled to our own views wether it be for him or against him, hell he would be pissing himself laughing at some of the jokes going around.
Personally I couldn't stand him, but did I watch him on TV...YES couldnt wait to see the next stupid thing he did, he entertained me. Do i think he was good for Australia and conservation...YES.

I'll say this from the outset: This thread is far from a condolences thread, and simply 'locking it' because you may disagree with the sentiments of others is absurd. I see this thread as a discussion on Steve Irwin, the events of his death and the events following it.
Crazy, I agree to a certain extent.
I certainly respect him for standing up for his values, and the way he lived his life (With particular reference to the "As long as I die doing something I love" mentality that was so prevalent... hell, I only hope I die doing something I love).
Whilst I aired my views that I did not respect the man, the point of my post was more that we are almost expected to raise the man up on a pedestal after his death, simply because he was an "Australian Tall Poppy"... and then we are expected to feel overwhelmingly sad as if this is a personal loss to us all.
I'm sorry, but I disagree with that mentality... as much as it is the norm in this country. I guess the best way to illustrate this is to give an example:
"Professor Graeme Clark was horribly struck down by a truck as he crossed a road outside of his home this morning." (... this is made up)
And whilst this is certainly just me hypothesising here, imho, he'd get... Minor media attention, minimal public interest and general indifference. No state funeral, no one-minute's silence... What makes Mr. Irwin any more deserving? What makes him deserving enough to warrant a one-minute's silence?
So, I'll reiterate. Condolences to his family, I feel for their loss and I truly hope they celebrate his life in their own way. I hold their decision to do this in the highest regard.
I'd just like to apologise to everyone, I feel this needed to be said for my own sanity if nothing else... I'm tired, and I'm sick of the media in this country, and the attitudes of the general public. Everyone's a goddamn hero (read: sports stars, public figureheads, TV soap actors), and the true heroes are constantly overlooked.

Colin Thiele died on the same day as Steve Irwin and it barely made the ABC news, let alone the commercial networks.
He was a teacher of great note in S.A. An author of over 100 novels (including Storm Boy for those of you who dont recognise his name) and was instrumental in making great changes to the South Australian system of education (relating mostly to training better teachers).
