My 2 cents
I run XP yes, on a 1900+ with 512ddr so any of you tell me my computer sux i'll slap you out
I dont run officeXp, but I do run alot of other software
I rip DVD's (am I allwoed to say that), oh, of course only ones that I own. So there is alot of programs there but none of them start up with my computer
When I first installed winxp that little blue loading bar, used to get 3/4 of the way across the screen and then I was in windows (that was schweet) but since I installed alot of other software it has increased my boot time dramatically
I have the following programs start with my computer
CloneCD
MSN
Norton Antivirus
Logitech Keyboard drivers
Download Accelerator Plus
StyleXP
so as you can see it does load a few memory suckers in my boot time, I cannot remember how long it takes me to start up computer, I will test it after this post
The one thing I found that increased my boot time the MOST, was settings inside my BIOS, now as you have not stated what sort of motherboard you are using then I am not much help, besides I only know how to tweak the mobo im using which is a soltek drv2 (come on fellas, applause) so you'd have to talk to someone that specialises in your motherboard
Now you think that since you uninstalled officeXP that it's all good, but what happens if you need office, your boot time will jump again, plus it slowly increases with the programs you install anyway
some things to do to reduce boot time are the following
You can remove things that you dnot REALLY need from the startup menu under programs
Right Click on my computer, choose manage, click on services and applications down the bottom, click open services, read the properties of each of these little suckers and debate with yourself what you dont need, for example, do you really need the service that records serial numbers of any portable media player that is hooked up with your computer? I think not, when you find these services (should be at LEAST 10) the double click on it, stop the service (not all can be stopped but it doesn't matter) and choose disable then click OK
A good idea to do is to write down what services you are stopping/disabling so if you do the wrong service (I disabled all sound once windows booted LOL) then you can quite easily fix it, this should do a fair bit for your computer
if this helps gimme a yell and let me know, but like I said, the massive performance increase will be with setting up your motherboard to handle your RAM to it's optimum performance
I'll turn my computer off now, and start timing as soon as I hit the power button, others are welcome to do so as well
Good Luck
From the instant I hit my power button until windows got me to my log on screen and I could type, was exactly 45 seconds
LOL, thats pathetic, I have over 120GB of crap on my system, LOL
Raker got 41.2 seconds to his log on screen with winXP
You also have to remember, some systems (non-standard ie. Hewlett Packard, compaq etc...) have better loading times because they are LESS user friendly and skip alot of settings at the POST because they SUCK!
