I must congradulate Apple on their newest release of the G4. My school have only just bought one (for me and mushi to play with :D ) and it has impressed both of us. OS X.1 is very, well, pretty, and mushi likes to play with it, but the thing that caught our attention was the hardware:

933Mhz G4 processor with 512Kb L2 and 2Mb of L3 cache
NVidia GeForce 4 MX on a NVidia manfactured graphics card
60Gb IBM DeskStar Hard Drive
"SuperDrive" CD\RW DVD\R

All for around $7,000
Yummy, yes please, i'll take two.

Post 4

How old are those macs Knight of Nih?

Post 5

However don't discard the fact that they are superior in many ways in desktop publishing.

Post 6

If it's mac anywhere in Darwin that doesn't belong to a graphics artists or similar desktop publisher. The mac is probably a door-stop by now.

Post 7

well said jay i am with u on that one buddy

ruin there i macs i think

Post 8

Well if they're that old of course they suck :P

The G3 and G4 are actually very powerful, despite only being about half the speed of Intel and AMD (all without needing much cooling). They also have awesome performance for many games (Diablo 2 is just one of many examples).

Gotta love the Dual 1 GHz Power Mac G4. Only problem i see with the new ones is they dont have the VooDoo 5 5500 in them :), thats what i liked about the older G3's :)

Also this is another reason i want a G4

lol true, for graphical design the new iMac is good, but give me $7k and I'll make a PC that eats it for breakfast

Post 11

That is a real point Meph..

Macs are so DAMN expensive.

In OCAu there was a thread about getting the quicksilver mac cases, which look so damn sexeh, it isnt funny.

And doing a backplane swap and having it as a PC case.

The freakin spare part price for the case was $2500, so the thread died, obvoiusly.

No that isnt a joke ( well it is really 2.5G for a case ffs ). That is the price.

As Meph said U can built a beast of a PC for $7G

Apple = $$$$$$$$$$$$$

A G3 400 in an iMac was running Q3 in software at 60 FPS! Can a PC do that :?:
G4 are good and the soon-to-be-released G5 makes me drool.
Their CPUs dont have fans on the HS either, they are superior. Im not an nVidia fan, but having an actual nVidia/nVidia card and not just their chip on something else is much better (BTW you can get other cards such as Voodoo3/4/5 or ATI).
Mac OS is so much better than anything else out there. I know its hard for some of us to believe, but Mac OS is actually good and runs stable.

Apple have a new eMac for around $2,395 Sly so you wont have to sell your house :D
Includes: G4 700MHz Processor, 17-inch flat CRT display, AirPort, built-in 10/100BASE-T Ethernet port for high-speed Internet access, FireWire, USB, stereo speakers and GeFoce2 MX 32Mb.

i would love a G4 but yes the price is...overly expensive...

Tarzan, what school u go to?

the Music department at DHS (Darwin High) bought a G4 a little while ago, DVD/RW, 1GHZ proc, ATi Radeon All-In-Wonder (not sure whether it was 8500 or original radeon) a custom sound card for all editing needs...that alone was ".5G's apple happily set it up for the school :)

Speaker system to die for, amps, huge sub, 5.1 surround through the entire room (these are like proper concert like speakers)

*drool drool*

cost them in excess of ten thousand but damn isn't it sexeh and sleek :)

Post 14

Meh DHS Music Department, I got some serious dislikings of the DHS music Department. Some comments of which I think should never be mentioned.

The RMIT Tafe Machines I've seen used to do Desktop publishing with, ie. 350mb Illustrator files, Run very smoothly, in which the same Illustrator version on my xp1900+ chugs to hell.

Post 15

yes the music department at dhs was....is...*cough* constantly screaming at you...(not mentioning names or anything but Ms. Mathe.....)

but the computer is good :)

Post 16

*cough* yes speaking of corrupt head of music department..*cough* expensive instrument from DHS funding for personal..

Don't forget Macs use 64bit CPUs, which easily outperform their 32bit counterparts.

Personally I think Suns SPARC machines are pretty cool. Not sure how much they would cost though (and the SPARCs, running using MesaGL to provide software GL can provide similar framerates in games such as CrystalSpace)
