still going too slow thats only like 500 mhz in 6 months Still faster than AMD
Post 4
Wortel, not quite sure what the hell your post is trying to say but there are two ways i have interpreted it as..
1. AMD are only slowly bringing out new chipsets and...
2. that AMD chips are slower than P4 chips...
my response:
1. they are working on new architecture and much more new technologies to implement. they are also lower the die size of the chip enabling them to reach higher clock speeds. they have brought out many new products recently but are readying for the release of their new procs.
2. one example: the 2100+ XP chip is equal to, in most tasks (and beats in some cases) the 2.2Ghz P4 chip. they are quite equal and i have seen no major difference to dissuade/persuade me to go with one over the other, performance wise.
500mhz in 6 months when they are working on new ways of making that 500mhz mean a lot more.

However, the Athlon XP 2000 is comparable in performance to the 2GHz Pentium 4. In any event, most analysts agree that the top Pentium 4 processors, although more expensive, outperform the top Athlon chips.
Ive tested both and the XP was faster... hmm @ that!
Until intel or AMD bring out 64 bit chips, i wont be moving very fast from my k7 700 :D

Intel's Itanium (64 bit) has apparently had so many problems it aint funny, whereas the Hammers from AMD are being tested and have been tested publically at lower speeds. The Hammer was show at 800 MHz and was roughly equivalent to a 1.6 GHz CPU. So when the Hammers come out for public sale, its probably very likely that they will be at 2 GHz which will be like a 4 GHz P4. So just cos P4 is at 3 GHz doesnt mean it will do any good.
Post 7
and the itanium has no backwards compatability for current applications/code, whereas the opteron (amd's 64bit cpu) can still run older applications.
Post 8
But intel's salt + vinegar is much better than athlon's.
Post 9
that's because they spend all their time on the salt and vinegar and forget to make use of the money they have budgeted for making better processors ;)
must admit though that the P4's are now a solid buy. they are cooler but more expensive...
they lie about their clock speed though...hmmm

LOL had me worrying for a sec, i was like wtf is he on :)
Then realised wtf u meant by salt + vinegar :)

The Northwood is supposably having problems at 2.8GHz in WindowsXP (hehe...must type on...hehe) so Intel must be working hard to find a solution to that. The AthlonXP has a 30% lower clock speed than the P4 and the Hammer is 50%. Thats not bad. Either you can get a really really high clocked CPU thats fast or a CPU thats half the clock of that and just as fast, either way I wouldnt mind either one in my case.
Why bitch about the Northwood when we can bitch about the 3.0-6.0GHz Prescott. It is supposed to be built on a 90 nanometer (.09) micron process will use the alleged "Yamhill" 64-bit extensions. It will have either 16 or 32kb L1 cache that is larger than the current 8kb and much faster, and possibly 1Mb L2. Also a 128bit XMM/SSE instruction set.*drools*
Post 12
i dunno the cheese and onion isnt bad either :|
Post 13
the P4 running @ the 533 FSB with 1066 RD RAM RAPES ANYTHING AMD CAN MAKE!
Fact :)
Hey im an AMD buff but thats the truth the new P4 chips are getting better for ocing and are out performing the Xps hands down.
Post 14
More expensive, but better performance.
The Northwood core is really performing well at the higher clock speeds.

Yes i do imply that AMD is going at a snails pace 333 mhz since Christmas i just too slow.

haha haha sorry that just makes me laugh. read odyssey's post and re-read my post...
and then do some research yourself.
there is no debating the fact that the P4's are getting better. however, saying something so stupid as "AMD are going at a snails pace, 333mhz since christmas". quite frankly that just makes you out to be an idiot. AMD and Intel have both been research new technologies. ie lower die size so that they can scale as high as the projected 5.0GHz by 2005. you ever actually stopped to think how long it took to get the manufacturing process correct so they could break 1ghz...man 66mhz was a breakthrough...

LOL you guys are funny....
All I got to say is that Intel are smashing AMD in terms of speeeed BUT in-terms of cost well we all know that we'd all buy an XP because it's a hell of alot cheaper than Intel chips, right!!!
AMD are only a little way through with the micron .13 chips (with the new Hammer and whatever the other one is called for servers), where as Intel are already producing the new micron .09 chips (which is nearly perfect in stability, and is greater than 4GHz). Now to me this shows that intel are way ahead in technology but are forgetting that the consumers want the resonably priced stuff.
But im sure that if we all were rich and had money to blow we'd all get Intel!!!!!
Well thats my thought into this topic
cya

If *any* of you guys truly believe that the power and quality of a processor is based solely on clock speed, go back to kindergarten and stop pestering the rest of us.

Gee whizz dad, a 3Ghz processor! that must be the best!
the speed is impressive, I'll grant you, but its about as useful as when you could buy 12x CD Rom drives - everything was still being burned at 2x speed anyway, so it was somewhat pointless.
I'd also like to point out the problems that occured with the original run of Pentium processors, not a huge concern considering the fault affected what, less than 5% of the people who originally purchased them, but still concerning when Intel shows a history of rushing things through the testing phase just to get sales.
Me? I'd prefer something that was well designed and well thought out, rather than running the risk of a thrown together chip, that was released for the sake of it.
Note: Aravi, this isn't aimed at you, as I appreciate the posting of the story as much as the next bloke, I'm just heartily tired of people hijacking threads for the sake of brand bashing.

Yes Intel are smashing AMD solely in terms of actual clock speed. however in terms of power for clock speed then no AMD are way ahead. AMD's new Opteron/SledgeHammer(server) CPU and the desktop one are 2 times more powerful than the P4. So basically the Hammer may only be clocked at2 GHz when they are released but they will be the equivalent of a 4 GHz P4. The current XP's are something like 30% faster than the P4 so that just goes to prove that AMD's CPU's are far superior atm, and probably will still be superior when they bring out 0.9 micron CPU's in the future.
Oh and if i had the money, no I would not buy a P4 I would buy an AMD, or better yet a G5 :P
Post 21
Sure The "P4" chips may be a little more expensive than the AMD chips. However they are good quality chips. IMHO
Look at it this way, when you want qaulity you have to pay a little extra for it.

If you are talking about the FSB then you are wrong. AMD said they have no plans to make an Athlon on a FSB higher than 133/266. The Via KT333/400 chipset mobos are a waste of time, unless you plan to overclock. If so then the P4 with its asynchronous memory clock will be right up your alley.

Not so AMD has been working on 0.90 micron for quite a while now, they thoroughly test their technology before releasing to the public. Thats why Microsoft said the Hammer CPUs were really stable compared to the Intel "Itanic" and "Itanic2". Also being a lower clock they dont need to rush out a lower die size as Intel does. Although I would like to see an IHS and proper thermal protection on an Athlon, but the Hammers will have them both.

Performance is futile - stability is perfection - I seek perfection.

Thats because the Athlon is getting old and was never designed to clock high, remember Intel dumped the P3 at 1.4GHz and the Athlon is still going. The P4 is designed to clock high, just as the Hammer is designed to have a massive IPC. The SiS 648 400DDR is a very close second to PC1066 or PC4200 when using cas 2.5. When cas 2 400DDR becomes available it will be superior and the SiS 648 also has 8xAGP, prepare for hornyness Flam :D .

I read somewhere on Andandtech about DDR 2... What's this?
Post 24
Its DDR series 2.
