Quote from Eaglehawk: Lately my monitor has started to emit a high pitched whine, I'm wondering what the problem might be.
X knows exactly what the monitor can handle (information taken from the monitors manual), so it isn't being driven at a refresh rate that is too high.
A high pitched whine in the back of a monitor is usually caused by either oscillation in the flyback transformer, or more famously, the filter caps going leaky. Now, that's not going to mean much to ya, but anyway... If it's a real high pitched whine that changes when you change graphics modes (particularly to different refresh rates), it's likely the flyback transformer.
To paraphrase: If symptoms persist, please see your doctor.
Yeah Locutus's monitor makes the worst damn noise, but he wont get a god damn new monitor. His monitor is a 15", was made in 1996 and is so dark that the gamma is cranked up to the max and it did have a whole heap of coloured nebulas (blotches) on it :)
I keep saying to him a new monitor is $300 for a 17" brand new, dunno why he doesnt buy one, his current one is damn evil and probably a nuclear reactor approaching meltdown :o

Coloured blotches? Sounds like a warped shadow mask or Gauss. Does the monitor have a degauss function? If degaussing doesn't fix it, the monitor is totally farked and will only get worse.
WRT gamma, my old 17" used to be pitch black until I pulled off the back of the case and adjusted the master screen brightness control on the flyback transformer.
Warning though. Don't go mucking about inside a running (or turned off) monitor unless you know what you're doing. There's 25,000 volts flying around in there...

Sounds like i was carrying it with one hand and dropped it on odysseys drive way :?
Unfortunately it's about 8 years old and dun have a degauss thingy, but it hasn't gotten any work......yet.

Changing down to 800x600 or 640x480 stops the whining. The whining is not constant, usually 15-30 minute duration.

Yeah, that's likely the flyback transformer oscillating. It'll only get worse, but seriously though, don't bother getting it fixed unless it's a REALLY speccy monitor. A flyback transform costs like $50, but a service place will charge you like "50 or so to install it.
Better off saving up while it's still going and buying a new one when it kicks the bucket.
whining isn't too bad, I saw a TV once that was shrieking like a banshee with an evil electrical crackle mixed in for luck. That may have been due to the pinhole in the insulation though :P
LOL Od, also with Loccys monitor some smart arses tried to fix it by using a speaker magnet and duh it made it freaky 60's style, then they managed to get it to be mostly one colour which wasnt too bad. When we got back from Macca's later on it had reverted back to the way it used to be, but its still a nuke, i dont like going near it and at lans its god damn annoying if our monitors are near each other cos it screws with my monitor
magnetized shadowmask - if you know anyone who works in TV/VCR repair, ask em if you can borrow a degaussing wand - it should clear up most of that problem.

Yeah, that's what causes that. The degaussing coil in your monitor will fix up some minor gauss, but major gauss, and you need a wand...
However, if some of your mates took to it with a speaker magnet, well, the shadowmask is probably warped, in which case the only solution is to introduce it to a USP :)
lol, but the wierd thing is that it wasnt a magnet that caused the original discolouration, it was caused by being dropped onto a concrete driveway, which i wouldnt have thought that would have caused it.

Yeah, but you can also get discolouration from the purity magnets getting shifted. This typically happens if someone drops the set :)
Anyway, the shock could have knocked the purity magnets a bit loose, and then the speaker magnet didn't help much.
Well we were shocked when we got back from maccas about 20 mins after they took to the monitor with the speaker magnet cos it reverted back to how it was before that so maybe it has a sort of auto degauss on it when its left for a bit, but yeah i guess the original dropping caused the magnets in it to go screwy like you said and i would guess that seeings as the degauss hasnt fixed itself, it cant.

But its a junker anyways :)
If you've still got it next DGA, bring it in, and I'll take a look at it between gaming. I can adjust purity on a monitor (it's a bastard to do, but I know how to).
LOL thanks for the offer, never know, maybe next year i ay even go on a road trip with some friends up your way and might even manage to attend one of the lans :)
But by then we'll probably have taken it to the tip along with a crowbar as Jay suggested :)
Darkwolf how do u fix colourisation. Ive got an old monitor and its purpelish. The three electron guns all work im just wondering if their warn down or the screens burnt from beeing on bright for too long. 5 years? And if or how it could be fixed?

If the entire surface of the screen has a purplish glow, that would usually indicate the green gun has gone weak (you have too much red and blue)... Bear in mind, this ONLY applies if the ENTIRE surface of the screen suffers from the effect, if you have patches that are purplish and patches that aren't, that's a purity problem...
On the back of the tube there's a board. On that board you'll find three trimmer potentiometers. Tweaking with them will adjust the balance of colour on the tube... However, be warned it's not as easy as just having one knob for one colour :) There's one knob for each pair of contrasting colours... So it's a bit of a bastard.
Again, a warning, if you do decide to pull the back off, be bloody sure you know what you're doing. There's more than enough energy in there to kill you, many times over, even after it's been left turned off for quite a long time.
MAS rules, on most occasions anyway. On one of their international flights someone had their complete computer kit thrown about by the Baggage handlers, so the passenger complained and had everything replaced exactly by the MAS staff.
Quote from Darkwolf: [quote:bd75d95dfb="Matt"]yeah its the whole screen. U going to next lan?
Probably. Are you the guy with the screen that's so green it looks like you're watching CS through a fishtank?

lol that's prolly me.. hah.. My monitor is so friggin dark. I now play with gamma cranked up good and proper. Can't believe all those times I died because ppl were hiding in those NON EXISTANT shadows... and ppl would say 'He was right there' and I couldn't see the bastard! Makes my blood boil I tell you. Bloody cable is split or loose and makes the screen go purple too... pos.. meh. And guess what? After reading this thread the other day.. I went back to my computer and WTF do I hear? Bzzzzzzz.. from my monitor. It's not a whine though it's just a bzzzzz and it does it in standby as well... so I guess this would be a different problem also obviously related to power (what else!) but different anyway.. hmm. Any thoughts?

Melbourne...;)
my monitor is bloody terrible...:( old and the bloody thing has got the worst blurriness...i tried adjusting a little knob inside the monitor but nope...:| bah...i hate it...it's giving me a headache now...bleh~

Quote from Imitation: Bloody cable is split or loose and makes the screen go purple too... My guess is its the same thing as Odyssey had, turned out to be the cable plug, one of the pins was disconnected or something along those lines and when Hallmark finally acknowledged a problem they fixed it. So might be a bit hard to replace the plug but you could probably do it, it might not look that great but then its in the back of the case so you wont see it :)
Hmm.. yeah this is a Gateway monitor from a system.. was replaced under warranty. Not as good as the original one. One day I'll replace the cable.. or replace it with a plug + cable. It's not too bad just every now and then the thing will go purple but I don't think it's in the cable (it might be) but rather at the monitor casing end.. there's a sort of a plug in there and you just jiggle it around or yank it hard into one corner and that usually fixes it either permanantely or for 2 mins.. or 10 mins.. etc.. some ppl prolly saw it at DGA 15. It's a little embarrasing actually :)
Sounds exactly like Odyssey's problem, going on and off but it was yellow. Good chance it will be the cable, just a matter of which end, so yeah could be the end connecting to the monitor
It got to the point when I didn't know if the monitor had turned yellow or I was simply running OpenGL. Games like Star Trek Armada, TA and War3 was a problem because the monitor made white yellow, so when I was white and the enemy was yellow or vis versa they were all yellow so I didn't know who was who, you get the point. Quote from MARTOK: we got back from maccas Yes somehow me made it both there and back with Jimmy driving. :? :(

yea i have done that before, to a computer monitor and a TV. either way its a fucking bastard of a thing to do, especially without a test pattern.

Anyway, why did you have to dredge this topic up? Studying necromancy?
