I have decided to move GU lock stock over to OzForces.
A bit of background. I now run all of the game servers at OzForces. At the moment that stands at nearly 50 servers. ( http://www.ozsn.com/serv-stats.php ).
With the constant problems with the Octa4 link, and the opportunity opening at OzForces for another server slot, the time was right.
This will mean the WWW site and the game server (only #1, there are now 5 dedicated war servers on OzForces) will move.
What it also means is that the majority of people (even, ironicaly, Darwin ADSL as it goes to Melbourne first) will get FAR better ping times.
This will all happen in the next few days, so keep checking here for any further news. I'll make sure that its as seemless a transition as possible.
GU is as it has always been, operated by ME, OverDrive.
As I now also work for OzForces, I am in a position to move the server to a better environment pipe size wise.
Thats it.
For the majority all it is is an IP change for #1. Thats it. The dns of the www site will change without notice to the new ip. Nothing else will be affected.
Well as much as i love the local (darwin) spirit of holding these servers, you do have a point OD, although saying that sub150 ping wasnt too bad compared to say the 50 odd i get on Internode.
But hey do whatevers best for the GU community I know for sure ill always be here no matter where the servers are.
I'm all for it the move, better pings etc., but does this mean the OCTA Gamers community aka gamersunderground etc as we know it. has its site hosted there as well ? ie. we don't want to loose the current community spirit that we have going, albeit it is mostly Darwin people but that has been one of the alluring aspects on playing on the OCTA servers for the last 2 years.
I went for a quick run, it is definitely smoother avg. ping 20-25ms :-) But I really would hate to loose contact with the various Darwin based boys & clans etc. I definitely would miss the interaction and social banter of the[TOB]/[S] etc. boys
My 2 cents worth. Looking forward to the brighter future.
The only people that will be negatively affected by this are current Octa4 dialup clients. Everyone else will find a performance increase either from faster www site page times to lower pings.
The site will stay the same. The site management will stay the same. The admins will stay the same. The community will stay the same.
Look, we ALL know how server location means SQUAT in the online world - nothing will change in this community... Like i said, Darwin ADSL will actually access it FASTER! now.
a bit of research on the current and upcoming servers:

in both cases, the ozforces server responds noticably faster.
The site itself will move, but it will stay "in tact" so to speak - it wont be changed at all, or "integrated" to Ozforces. It will be moved just because people will be able to access it better at Ozforces.
Silly OD, shouldn't have mentioned anything about the forums, and noone would have been any wiser to the fact it moved, unless they actually wanted to find out for themselves.
Nothing here changes... U still goto http://www.gamers-underground.com as normal.. But the actual location of the data will shift.. U wont know a thing.. And like Pal said the DNS will just point to a new IP..
GU servers IPs will change.. But all the sounds, community spirit will remain..
this community isnt octa based, its gamers-underground based..
Put simply even a slightly higher ping is much better if the connection is clean as a lower ping with lots of lag is much more unplayable.
Here we are In a world of corruption Human nature is Of violent Breed Who cares if there;s no tomorrow When I die for my future's Laid out for me Can't you see? Rise above the lies Morals on a backwards globe A sin to you For me it's hope
Quote from Sly_Fox: And the GU#1 will still be registered members only, we wont get swarmed by tards..
Nicely put but thats good too, would be a pain in the ass having all these gay people comig in - um I assume the server will still remain at 22player? cos i liked that, didnt like it when it was 18 +2 (wasnt enough room)
Um another question for ya, when we do want a war, will we have to use the GU#2 (in darwin) or will we just book out an Ozforces war server?
Octa4 hasn't cottoned on to the fact that the community has moved on.
after this though, they may start asking questions..
Neo and Tn1 - can you contact me ASAP regarding what you want done with those machines. Guess I should also get in touch with Darren from FITS regarding his motherboard.
You guys all know where to find me - even though they'll all be being slack this weekend and lanning :P
yer thats was lag stike last night.. id never played so good , getting all those kills when i didnt even know i shot :) . good wrk OD . finally octa #1 can rest in peace, now it's on to the next generation of the GU
Quote from Sly_Fox: And the GU#1 will still be registered members only, we wont get swarmed by tards.. everything remains as we like it.. Good that answered my question. OD the move seems to be the best option for both you and the rest of us, good work and good luck with the big move.
The only problem I can see is I am one of those Octa4 Dial up peeps. I live in the bush area of Darwin, Karama, where I cannot get ADSL, On ramp, wireless.
Ohh Ive got the cash, but Telstra hasnt got a fck clue therefore I do belive I may be screwed.
Guess Id better hire some more DVD,s and reload Duke Nukem.
The obvious choice here would be OzForces Dialup (you would get the best route to the server).
Plan prices here
If you want to just see what your ping would be like, try the trial account.
Sorry guys but this was a community saving move - the Octa4 link has been steadily denegrating to the point of being unusable. Shit, Octa4 as a whole was off the Internet for two hours last night before anyone noticed. Look at this graph ( http://www.ozstats.com/cgi-bin/smokeping.cgi?target=Externals.GUOcta4 ) and check the packetloss.
If I had kept it the way it was we would've had less and less people playing on the servers, and therefore less and less interest in coming back here.
PS: What this also now mean is that for the first time EVER you can play on a GU server DURING BUSINESS HOURS! What a concept. Check the above graph to see why that was NOT a possibility before.
Fare thee well from most of SB for a while then until Telstra ADSL enable's our house or we get an ozforces dialup account.
Which means we have to disconnect our O4 accounts which seems a little weird. Although the ping jumps will be less on ozforces a basic ping jump from 150 -250 is a hell of a lot and our latency grows worse :(
Shit man, sometimes I don't know why I bother... should've just left it alone and watched it die, but I didn't. I did something that would SAVE it. So please, by all means keeping shooting me down.
OD don't stress, you've done whats in the best interest of the majority and the community, but please let us few dialuppers have our whinge!
When you put so much of your own time into something that give you no return except for the odd thanks, I sometimes get a tad sensitive. Sorry, I'm only human.
We all knew how bad it was getting @ octa.. I have the distinct feeling that those ppl complaining havent actually tried the new server..
Whether the ping is slightly better of worse, its a hell of a lot smoother..
The ping doesnt fluctuate AT ALL.. And that makes for such a more enjoyable game..
If U have a octa4 dial up account just try the server.. Failing that try the " trial account " it wont cost a cent. See if its better..
If it is, then switch..
OD, we all know how much work U do here. I do anyhow.. U dont get paid a cent to do it, and personally I thank you.. Cos without your work, this community wouldnt exist..
Dan mate no probs from this end at all. Never shoot da man down. never. Had to be moved to prevent it falling over. Changing ISP is no probs. My main bitch is with those Telstra peeps that cant provide a service they offered me and signed me up for.
I've raised the issue of network latency with O4's operations manager any number of times, the only response I get is "we need proof"
Basically I have no faith in O4's network anymore - and thats saying something considering they're my employer..
You've done what you had to do for the good of the community OD - don't let the whingers get you down mate.
fyi I tested out the UT2k3 demo last night on the GU server that OD has running, solid 200 pings, but it seemed to be very smooth, so all is not lost :P
Despite the above bitching, I have played in the broken server and it runs well. I have also spoken to some new ppl from OzForces too, I think its good I don't see why some ppl are complaining. Be thankful ppl.
i just quickly jumped in the server (empty) and had a run around, ping was around 190-220. thats about 100ms faster than when it was hosted at o4. (comindico/dot.net dialup) see back a couple of pages for comparative traces.

regardless even though it's from Melbourne Netspace DSL to Darwin, that huge pickup onto Octa4 isn't really acceptable. It even managed to hop onto the Optus backbone without missing a beat.
Okay Ive signed up with OZ Forces, went on line and raped em. Called me a cheat, wallhacker, plus some other unnice words. Made me feel warm and fuzzy.
Few cautions given, few name calling sent back, Green writing on screen to the naughty ones and they all shut up real fast.
Used the nic the_cleaner. Seems to work.
Oh the ping was better, very stable indeed. I am impressed.

I've been with OzForces since when they started, and i've only had the shits with them once, and on that case it wasn't their fault. On my ozemail 56k, downloads were like 3.5kb/s, with ozforces its the high 5's low 6's, which is pretty good, my ping on the new GU/OF server is about 160 (130-40 ms).
It's cheap and pretty damn sweet, i'm on the netgamer, unlimited everything, 6 hour sessions.
If you don't want to sacrifice GU gaming....join OF!
Hey OD will the stats now reflect the new location too ?
I've not noticed much performance improvement for me - probably says more about my ability than the ping :? - I am in Perth, which I think links via Melbourne. Either way I am pleased that you are able to keep the whole show on the road. Thanks.
This is a great move OD. I'm appreciative of your efforts.. don't worry about that.
I use Dot but make good use of the OZForces Dialup only servers daily.
Yesterday I had a ping of 170ms and a few times it dipped down into the 160's and that's pretty fekin good.
It had got to the point where I wasn't playing on GU really anymore because of the pings. Now it's sort of going to be worse.. bloody 30 ms vs 200 ms but that's a hell of a lot better than 250 - 500 ms vs what, 80 - 100 ms :D
I'm just wondering, is this a sign of Octa4 going bye bye.. or at least heading that way? I know it's not cool to jump to conclusions but if things just keep getting worse and worse.. ?
Also will the GU stats count towards the OzForces stats as well as the GU stats or will they be kept seperate?
Also OD would you then be the person to contact regarding issues with the OzForces servers?
Im glad that the server is still alive thanks to OD and his wisdom. Im glad for everything he and other admins have done for us in regards to online gaming.
However......
Has anyone noticed that there is like, ZILCH players in GU#1 now? i mean, b4, there used to be a few players. but 90% of time now, theres no one in at all........
It might just be the times that im looking, but yeh, i dont see half the normal people playing anymore :(
again, im not dissing OD or anyone, just that there seems to be less players now.
I agree on a Friday night (tonight) I had to wait till about 10:30pm before anyone showed up, i got a 1 on 1 with Gobbles earlier but that was about it really.
Well I have tried playing on ozforces for about a week and allready i am pissed off with the connection. I don't think I will be able to play on internet cs due to having pings at least 4 times greater than the rest of the players. I just jumped onto the broken server and I was getting pings of 1 bloody second. I was told that there would be a slight variance in the ping, a slight rise on dial up, but not that much of a rise. Anyway I'll see you guys in lans.
Sorry what I meant to say was that I joined the ozforces dial up, I had been getting pings of up to 1 second....and we know that a calm situation can turn into a clusterfuck within that period in cs. So sorta puts me outa the game. What i do find strange is I logged onto gu#1 on the ozforces account today and got a ping of close to 1 second, i then disconnected and logged onto my parent octa4 account ... you know the 39.95 gold plan thinggy well I was getting 300ms pings. I though that if ozforces were hosting the games then aren't their accounts suppose to have better response times. Its got me confuesed. Im going to try and stay with ozforces for a month, but check back with my familys account once in a while. If I find that octa4 still has better pings I may switch back to octa4 again. Its a bit frustrating. :?
Well there must be some other problem then because you should be getting around 200ms to OzForces servers. Other major/popular servers are around 250ms and on the rest of servers out there you'll be on about 300+.
Ignite, could it be that you have a crappy phone line? Maybe email OzForces with your problem, they're nice enough blokes who will most likely try to fix it up for ya (if they can)
well after playing on it for a while defently lower pings , that doesnt mean its erraticated lag all together thou , cuz office is still laggy :), but a vast improvment none the less , and i got to say more fun than ever
No not really, I did some e-mailing and the techos gave me some hints but no real improvements...they told me to call the service centres during working hours to go through more options. At present I haven't done that since I haven't been at home during working hours or when I have the other family members are using the computer - doing "important" work. So I will eventually get around to giving them a call and solving my huge lag problem.
