OK, well i have seen many people from Darwin complaining about the no change in ping to this server, on avg the avg adsl ping was anywhere between 130 - 170ms and for dialup well im not sure.

Anyway I was looking on the servers this morning and i noticed a huge drop in ping, a good 50 ms to be about right, so i decided to jump on.
Pings ranged from 80 - 110ms. Nice drop

This was done at 11:30am on a 512/128 Internode ADSL connection

Please post anything that may help me to verify this, I want to know if i am correct about this, ta.

PS - Yes I know this should be in the Game Servers forum.

Post 2

Would most liekly be correct, most people here are getting better pings on the new server, i've dropped from 300 ping to 150, so im a happy lad.

Post 3

I've dropped from about 150 - 80. I love being able to hit people :D

Post 4

I've went from 320 on octa upto 360/450 with high packetloss on ozforces :)

So lets look at the figures in ratios.
Octa4:Ozforces
Neo: 320:400 = 8:10
DarwinDSL: 150:150 = 10:10
Southerners(cable/dsl): 100:40 = 25:10

And its confirmed, it was OD's great plan to increase my ping, and lower his own ;)

Hehe, just joking around :) I'm over it.

Disclaimer: These figures are rough estimates and cannot be taken as true factual information.

ANYONE with IPrimus is going to have bad pings as Iprimus has a screwy peering arangement with Comindico that sees all traffic routed between the two networks via the US.

Do a trace Neo, the reason your ping is bad is that its taking a holiday across the pacific first.

Internode on the other hand have asked for the IP range of our game servers so that they can arrange an even BETTER route. Just goes to show how some ISP's care and some don't.

Thanks for that OD, i thought i wasnt seeing things :P , yeah its a nice drop, about time Internode got their act together (its been getting slower and slower) Now its fine again ???
Oh well I aint complaining :D

Oh yeah, anyone on Telstra ADSL had a look at it? Any different for them?

Post 7

Even uberer ping? w007!

Post 8

on average i think my ping went up by about 10 and i am on telstra adsl

ummm what is a TRACE and how do you do it?

Post 10

Roche..

Start, Run

command

tracert < a IP or web address here >

And it plots out the hops for U. And U can see where your signal is being routed thru.

tracert = trace route

:)

Post 11

90 -100 ping to ozforces shows a 40latency drop

Post 12

All hail OD and his mighty plot to make it better for us down south
15-30 ms in trace route, im a happy chappy :D

I can't agree more...

Post 14

Me not complaining 120 - 130 ping on octa now 70 - 80 on ozforces sweet :D ME like to say thanks to OD.... :D

Post 15

i don't wanna seem like a winger but i hate GU servers now. i can get better Ping on IPGN servers and im on octa4 28k dialup. ppl might say stop winging and go play on IPGN but i know that on GU server 1 there iz no cheats and i know most ppl on GU. so i am gonna keep playing on GU but i am dissapionted at the server move and hope u get another octa4 server soon

Post 16

Everyone who's on dialup just drop whoever you're with and go get OzForces.. or Dot.. whoever.. OzForces ends up being the better deal though. I don't understand why anyone on earth would use Octa4 besides the fact that the GU servers were hosted there.

I'm not complaining since I went from 250 - 500ms.. to 180 - 220 ms on OzForces servers. Sometimes as low as 170ms and lower.. that is uber farking l33t for me. If you're a wimp like me you can live on the dialup servers.

Post 17

Well I just change from octa4 dial up to ozforces dial up and well...it isn't great. Before the server moved I would get an average of 200ms, after the move i got 600ms, after i moved i get 400ms.

Oh by the way, Im a bit worried with that wierd ass dial up number it being a 01, I looked in the phone book and it doesn't look like an area code. Does anyone know if this number is ok - I know it gets me connected but I don't want to get my phone bill and have a heart attack because it isn't a local call or something like that.

Post 18

Imit...I've got Dot, and for any other server it's pretty bad so I don't suggest it :P
go the 400+ ping on optus !!

Post 19

Ignite, its a non toll exchange number..

Its not a area code cos it is the same number anywhere in Oz.

It just means that

a/ the number is re-routed to a local number ( like say dialing a pizza ).
b/ the number is just basically a toll free number, so anyone basically just gets a local call to it..

Post 20

:D Thanks for that Sly, I was just worried about that since Ozforces tell you to check with your carrier. Now I am happy, I can now play anytime of the day on a decent band width but still large pings....I CANT WAIT TO MOVE OUTTA HOWARD SPIRNGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Post 21

Here is a question for all Darwin ADSL users ...

why am I the only one on as a sub 100 I mean I am talking 80-95ping where as the rest of you are 105-115ping ??? and thoughts as to why?

Post 22

Your not alone Unseen. I now can't use the dial up only servers as my pimg is sub 100.

I am not complaining I like the new pings.

Post 23

I think it is because your on Telstra ADSL (thinks)

tn1 did a ping of GU and he recorded 80 odd ms ping, and i was like WTF!

I'n on Internode and id say so are the other mob or on something else.

Post 24

I dunno DoM..

I play everywhere I used to play on DB/Optusnet and there's not much difference. If anything it's only better.

I have never played much on Optus because it's shit. Ping it and you get around 150 ms. In game I was going from about 250 - 300ms. It's really laggy with quite a lot of choke I normally don't get.. Still, this wasn't too hard. All the dialups have the same ping and look even the LPB's aren't very low.

But how about Netspace? Straight pings are 180 ms.. ping in game is 220 - 240 ms.

Internode pings about 190 ms.. in game it's about the same as Netspace...

Datafast pings about 200ms. In game I'm getting 250ms..

Pacific pings around 170ms and I'm getting 260+ ms in game.

So yeah..

EDIT: I went and played on Optus just then (it's 2am) and I was getting 200ms.. so 300ms during peak times and 200ms at night.. quite playable to me. Looks like it's not a shit as I remember.

Post 25

why the hell would iPrimus run their servers through the US?
i agree with mojo that iPGN have better pings but there are also alot of cheaters on that to. All the new maps are good and seem to be on GU and i can';t find any other server with them so i'll keep playing, might not be very good though, but what the hay!

Post 26

Might be the same sort of reason that Optarse was routing me to Singapore then back to Melbourne when trace routing to the MOS servers no more than 50 km's from me

Post 27

AFAIk because it is cheaper. Stupid huh?

Post 28

yay pings are good, gw OD 8)
