Intel P3 866 (133x6.5) 390 or so Mb RAM. Gforce4 Ti 4400 Win2k - SP3 + all CU's D-LINK D100 DSL MODEM - PCI NETGEAR FAST F10X NIC - PCI
Cant work out if my PCI slots are dead, or if my mobo is stuffed in genereal. Heres a synopsis.
the otehr night, i powered up my comp. i am the gateway for my home network (comprising 3pcs). For some reason, my NIC was not enabled. Confusing. I enabled it, as soon as it finished enabling the NIC, my pc powered down by iteslf. Bizzar i thought. i powered it back up and recieved a blue screen on one of the NIC's vxd entries. Fair enough i thoguht. I removed the NIC from my comp and powered back on. Fine. PC booted into windows. However, my DSL modem was no longer detected. Baffled, i powered down yet again, removed my DSL modem and powered back up (at this stage i also removed the vxd entry that was offending my NIC).
Now for some reason, my Gforce4 wasnt being recognised (AGP, not PCI). I took it out and put it back in and it worked fine again....fkn odd.
The Pc now booted perfectly fine. so i shut her down again. I put the DSL modem back in and booted. windows installed it, i was happy. I shut down, installed the NIC again and powered back up. Windows detected it, and attempted to install it. It got to the last driver and BAM, my pc shutdown again.
I removed teh card yet again and put a little Token Ring combo card in my PC (in the same PCI slot as the NIC) and it works fine.e I have tested the NETGEAR card in anotehr pc and it works fine in that comp.
Now im not sure if its my NIC, my PCI slots or my mobo in general that is fux0red. Any thoughts?
i had a similar prob with a dlink dfe530tx dude and it turned out to be drivers, after a lot of farking around (for you top gun! :evil: ) it worked after using updated drivers.
it could also be the NIC - I've been told that we shouldn't play with the network settings on our workstations due to a winXP bug with this type of card that kills them. FYI I don't know how true this is, I've never had any problems with it.
If the driver update doesn't fix it, throw the card away and get a decent one. :P
The card is dead. Three diff systems, it shut all three down when tryin to install its drivers. Drivers were fresh dl from the net each time. I took that specific NIC out of my PC, and all my PCI Devices work again :)
