oh and is the pay for new pilots as bad as it is in the states? for CAPTAIN, not just some shitty position over there its like "3 000 peryear til theyre with the company for a lil while..and thats with major airlines.

my dad has a friend who flies cargo for cathay pacific, and he earns well over AU $250 000 a year. you sure that's not "30 000 a year? it's insanely difficult to get into a major airline, and once you do, you are responsible for the lives of hundreds of people...

Post 10

It's a bit like this, flying major commercial airlines, even in the USA = $BIG$

Any pilot who's responsible for hundreds of lives isn't going to get paid peanuts to be careful.

Post 11

if u can get dsl dose that mean i shoudl be able to in karama?
what was stopping u from getting it before?

wicekd so do ug et to fly bigger planes andall ver the place now?

Flicking those switches to autopilot is damn hard work.

Post 13

It's mainly for when those switches don't work is that I'd sure hope paid well.

Post 14

ahaha, totally agree.

Was just a jab, not taking anything away from P-Air's skill/know-how/expertice(spelling).

Post 15

wd dude :)

Post 16

cheers guys

start training hopefully this weekend

In answer to some of the questions

Pilots in oz are paid very poorly until they manage to get to the big jets. And even then the pays are falling bellow what pilots were used to be paid. For example, Virgin pilots are being paid practically half what qantas pilots are paid to fly the same airplane.

Main problem stems from new pilots willing to work for nothing just to get some hours under their belt. And almost the majority of operators pay's are under the award.

So really it makes you wonder why people want to spend $40000 to get a licence to fly commercially for a job that no longer has the stabilty and the financial reward it once had

I have been chasing up some trial flights with the local training school for brain dance, and was wondering if anyone else was interested.....I'm trying to organise a deal for a group to go through the flying school, whereby the participants have a breifing the instructor on the ground, and then go up for a 30 min instructional flight. ANY1 interested?????

Post 17

:( I'm not in Darwin I'd have definitely been interested otherwise... Can't put it off for 5 months? :P

Also I can understand what's happening with the aviation industry lately. My cousin who spent 5 years at Uni in Sydney and was trained to fly even up to the big jets (747-400's) and did for a while has gone back to Malaysia and is running a desk job as a director for an airline. Apparently only 2 out of something like 40 of the people who graduated with him are still flying.

Um you all know that planes ( especially commercial ones ) are all built by the lowest bidder and this means they usually take short cuts .... like leave out a few bits here and there to save money ....

Just flew on a new 737 - very nice .... and the food is better too - real knives and forks ( metal ) and no more cardboard boxes ....

SO why all the hoo har about taking metal stuff on to planes when they give you a perfectly good metal knife and fork and spoon on the plane ?

Ahhh one of life's great inponderables ....

if a plane has a serious accident in the air, caused by a fault in the design it spells death for the model and the manufacturer. one of the more recent examples of this is the concorde, although there have been others. trust me, when it comes to making a commercial jet there are NO shortcuts taken.

Ummm its called commercial reality ... they have to cut costs somewhere to be the lowest bidder ... ergo product quality suffers ...

So you only get what you pay for ..... so they build them to meet minimum specs ... and we all hope the clown who devised the min. specs erred on the side of caution .... like DC10's with ONE bolt holding the engines on ....

Post 21

you'll notice that the DC-10 is no longer a commercial aircraft. it's a reality that wherever they can a company will cut costs. however, it is a also a reality that a company (particularly larger coorporations) do whatever they can to please the customer, even if it costs slightly more. this is because they aren't fighting price wars they are fighting PR wars, and are constantly trying to steal market share. if boeing were to cut corners at the cost of safety, not only would it be all over the headlines, it will also be the downfall of the company. look at Pan pharmaceuticals. in some industries it's not worth it to cut corners like that because it will kill the company.

Post 22

Um DC10 was for a long time ..... till all the engines fell offf - naughty fork lift operators ...

Agreed but they still skate close to the minimums to get the business .... a bit of a monoply ....

Post 23

Ouch ... OK point taken ... but my armrest was loose in the last 737 I flew in and it worried me .... just joking ... but it was really loose

I thought the spares and indeed every part in a plane has a unique serial number and there is a record of all these that make up the plane so when it falls out of the sky and they work out which bit broke they can sue the ass off the manufacturer of the dud part .... and thats why it all costs so much

I reread where i saw it (Stupid White Men by Michael Moore) and it talks about how he was at the airport and he started talking to a pilot for american airlines. The starting pay for a pilot at American Eagle (commutor airline for american airlines) is "6 800 per year. The pilot then goes on to explain that this is quite a high figure compared to the "5 000 at Delta air and the "3 000 at continental express. It also goes on to say how you have to pay for your own flight training, uniforms etc so the poor pilot only ends up with about $9000 per year. AND THATS BEFORE TAX!
The pilot then tells a story about how a guy who he worked with went to welfare to apply for food stamps so he could feed his family of four kids. the front office at american airlines found out and sent him a emssage saying no pilot for american airlines was to apply for food stamps or welfare of any sort. if they did apply for it they would be let go from the company...

sounded pretty frucked to me too but there ya go. these figures are in us dollars but are still very poor. Michael Moore even says how scared he was to get on a plane being piloted by a guy who might be earning less than the kid at taco bell. i hope its better for you here in australia go man. goodluck!

Post 25

i'd be very caqreful when you say manufacturers cut corners. When engineers get a contract to build something - they strive to lower costs and stay within budget as well as delivering on time

this would similarly apply for the building of aircraft - they would strive to cuts costs, but i highly doubt that they [reputable manufacturers] are going to, say, use a cheaper metal during construction if it meant that there was a higher risk of the wings folding etc

Post 26

There's more than just physical costs which need to be contemplated.

There's the very real, very damaging cost of a lawsuit when your part fails. Every company in aviation that gets business has an insurance policy against lawsuits, and you can bet your bottom dollar that the insurance company keeps an eye on things.

I read Stupid White Men and I think it's pretty sh*t that in america a pilot can have $9000 american BEFORE tax for flying a plane and I earnt about "2000 american AFTER tax and I just push trolleys round a carpark 5 days a week!!!!
