Pc boot problem...

Righto I just put in a new mobo and cpu, connected everything up correctly afaik and start it up. Everything goes for a few seconds, sounds like its working and then it all turns off. Is this an issue of my psu not being rated high enough or something else?
Help greatly appreciated!

Post 2

You may not have seated your heatsink correctly. It turns on.... heats up - and some anti burn shield type software turns your pc off before it cooks. Check your cpu fan and heatsink.

Post 3

Checked the heatsink and fan, even removed the thermal paste that came with it and reapplied some silver thermal paste. Doesn't make a difference. Tried taking the mobo out and starting it but same thing happened. Disconnected everything except the cpu video card and ram, same thing happens. Is it possible I need a new more powerful psu? What else could be doing this, it's driving me crazy :(
Also, im using AMD Athlon™ 64 3500+ Processor Retail (939)(Venice) using the heat sink and fan that came with the cpu, Abit AV8 Motherboard and 1024MB TWINX-3200C2 DDR RAM Corsair (2X512MB).

Post 4

What cpu heatsink/fan are you using?

Post 5

Also why is this in General?

Post 6

More info!

How can we know if your power supply is underrated if we don't know how big it is, and what is it driving (ie, a caseload of fans and 2 x SLI 7800??)

Post 7

Yes.. please more info.

Does it boot at all? any beeps?
How long does it stay alive? :P
How new is that 3500+?
Got all your power cables in?
Know the revision of the BIOS?
and yeah.. what power supply you using?

Post 8

the cpu is brand new, as with the mobo and ram. no other case fans other than the heatsink one. I tried running it barebones with just cpu ram and video card. It turns on for about 5seconds and then turns off. I can't get into bios or anything.

Post 9

Did you have to get a converter for your power supply lead to fit the mobo?

Post 10

reload! can you please give us a much more detailed layout of specs?
So we know your Mobo, Ram and CPU... whats the rest of the computer?
More information = more ability to assess the problem because at this stage it could be a huge amount of things... If your PSU is underrated we won't totally know just by giving us just a wattage...

Post 11

I shouldn't matter whatthe rest of the comp is if I've only got the cpu ram and video card plugged in and the problem is still happening. No I didn't need a converter for my power supply cable. What else do you need to know about the psu?

Update BIOS, i'm willing to bet your BIOS doesn't support the newer memory controllers in the Venice and San Diego cores.

http://www.abit-usa.com/downloads/bios/bios_revision.php?categories=1&model=175

Use BIOS 24, that has official support for 3500+ Venice.

Hope it works.

Oh and sorry, yeah forgot, as you can't actually use the computer. Can you find someone with an older Clawhammer, Winchester or Newcastle core? Use that CPU and flash your BIOS, failing that take it back to where you got it, they might be able to do for you.

Post 14

dickie power switch ? check your connections make sure no bare wires touching mine use to switch off :S..

make sure your cpu is sitting properly and firmly in the socket and heatsinks on the right way :S.

thats all i can think of jono might be right about the bios issue may help to update it if its an old 939 board :)

Yep! Reading the Posts is the KEY.

Post 17

so thats the stock cooler then? sif use that thing. It might be cooking. But should be fine.

Make sure any extra motherboard power leads + video card power lead are ALL plugged in. If not that. Try re-seating ram and video card.

If that dosn't work buy a better PSU.

If that dosn't work send it back.

Post 18

whats the wattage of your PSU .. you havnt posted that here yet..

Whats your video card as well.

cheers.

Post 19

I'm about 90% sure it's BIOS :p

Post 20

See if you can reset the BIOS either through jumpers or taking the battery out etc.

It should be in the manual for your motherboard.

This has worked for me when I have come across a problem like this.

Post 21

bs brand new. whats his wattage of psu .. 200w wont be enough if he is running a 7800gtx for eaxmple ..

TO MANY UNASWERED QUESTIONS HERE

Post 22

Do we even know he hasnt plugged his cpu fan in the wrong header and has an-auto shutoff (no fan detect) stopping it?

Post 23

True, but go through the BIOS revisions of that motherboard. It doesn't support a venice cored CPU. He would have to do a BIOS update in order for it to work. That's what I think and that's what i'm sticking with until he fixes it. I may be wrong but seems the most logical reason.

Post 24

I took it back to the place today because I could have sworn the mobo was simply rooted. They plugged it in with my ram and cpu and tell me it works fine, the only problem was that the heatsink wasn't clipped on properly, which is a load of shit because I had just unclipped it before I took it to them... at any rate, they wacked it back on with new thermal paste and said the system was working fine. So I'm left pretty speechless and wanting to punch a wall. Anyways so I now fork out another $70 for a new Thermaltake 430psu because I can only figure mine isn't enough. This is on top of the $35 service fee for them to tell me ****all. Get home from work tonight and stick in the new psu. Plug everything in and hold my breath...

SAME ****ING PROBLEM

At this point I'm ready to stab someone and something, including myself because I don't know wtf I've done wrong.
So here's what I know now:
All the hardware (according to them) is fine.
My psu is not under rated.
The system is not shorting as I've tried running it out of the box.
The cpu isn't overheating as I havn't touched it since they gave it back to me having said it works fine.
BIOS doesn't need flashing as they said it's working.

Any new ideas guys? This is driving me absolutely god damn insane. Not to mention it all being a giant waste of time and money. I'm about ready to smash it all with a hammer being this frustrated. I don't particularly want to fork out another $35 for them to tell me it's fine. $70 is a lot of good money that could have otherwise been spent on pretty much anything rather than completely wasted on my own retardedness. :(

Post 25

Hmm something seem's a bit out of wack here.. In all honesty if I were you i'd take your box down to the shop and see if they can't help you for no charge, any nice place would if you got the gear from there.. Just say your having troubles and you've brought it in once before but you've told me it's working, however when I go home and put it all together I still get the same problem.

Ask them right then and there if they can quickly plug it in and have a look for you, anyone with some decent knowledge should be able to tell you what it'd be. Make sure your there to witness it because for all you know they could just be f**ing you around.

I find it a bit suss that you still can't get it to work after theyve "tried" and said it's fine, something doesnt quite fit there.. either your doing something slightly wrong or yeah. Did they use your graphic card? Try it without plugging in the mouse and keyboard. Try it with one stick of RAM, try in different slots.

Also, does it actually boot? Does the monitor show anything? does it beep? I assume the power comes on? fans turn on?

Post 26

im pretty sure that down in brisbane theres a Computers For You shop and if its the place u got it from, its most likely Rooted and they are lying about it.

Post 27

Sounds like a problem I had once when I put in a new mobo. My problem was that I forgot to move one of the screw seatings that was no longer needed with this mobo and it was touching the back on the mobo causing it to short out. Might be worth checking if you have done the same thing.

Post 28

yeah I'm taking it back today in my box all set up how I have it set up and asking them what is wrong. I'm gonna ask if they can do it free of charge considering I've just spent over $600 on shit from them including a $35 service fee that didn't yield shit. Otherwise I guess I'll cough it up anyway seeing as I kinda want a working pc, but hot damn I won't be happy :(

Post 29

try a bench test before you do it :| might be earth problem

take the board out of the case lay down a static bag ontop of the motherboard box plug everything it and test it sitting on the desk see if she fires :D

another thing it could be i ran across a problem with a guy i know his pc wouldnt work at his place would work at mine ended up being the plug on the wall lol confused the shit out of me and him for 2 days :S.

Post 30

He's already done that korny.

I'm going with the shop not testing it properly. The wiring/plugs in his house shouldn't be an issue cause they were running a compy a few hours before he tried the new one. We thought it could be shorting on the case - took it out and tried again, same prob.

Jono - doesn't even get to loading bios. Turns on and before anything shows up on screen (about 3-5 secs) everything turns off, including fans. Heatsink has been mounted right, re-mounted it twice both times done properly with thermal paste. Tried using both of the RAM sticks, tried using each one by itself in each slot - nothing. No beep code from mobo. Thats why we thought it could be shorting on the case but that isn't it either.

Post 31

obvious you guys are missing something.

most probably something simple.

Post 32

All I can really think of is your graphic card or BIOS, they are really the only things you haven't tried differently. Corsair RAM is usually fine in any machine, but may be a problem.. I really couldn't tell you from here..

It's still assuming the guys that tested it are lying, but again who knows..

I think in a situation like this you should just take it back and make them look at it. Like you said for $600 surely they can have a quick look. But then again, there are some real assholes out there..

Post 33

have you tried using a different power swith on your case, as on my case, every now and then then i hit the power switch it gets stuck, and turn it self back off,

same problem you are having.

Post 34

well if he bench tested it then he wouldnt of used a case switch ?

Post 35

why bother with a switch on a benchtest? short the pins with a screwdriver.

Post 36

Sif use a screwdriver my DFI has on/reset button right on the board :D

Post 37

fixed it. As always, the solution was a really simple one. New power supply fixed it. :/
Oh well at least now I can play wow properly with a gig of ram
Thanks for all the help guys :)

Grats Kurt :p

Post 40

Ah... Good to hear.

I was going to say the Flux Capacitor had become unstable, opening a multidimensional temporal wormhole around one of the CPU pin connectors, naturally causing a delay in contact, such that when you pressed the on button, it detects the button being pressed to turn it off in the future... Amazing.

It happens, honest. :p

Post 41

On a more (or less, you decide) serious note, what is the system you're running, and what you upgraded from? (including PSU if possible)... often helps with people who search for that problem in the future...

Seriously, that DOES happen.
