I have clients there reporting they are packing up their shop and moving stock to another location, laying in supplies. Looks pretty real from their POV.
Despite what's reported on that forum OD linked, Katherine hasn't been evacuated and as of the moment all they have done is send kids home from school.
It's funny that people are panicking and buying up stores of meat and milk, when of course the first thing to go in a natural disaster is electricity.
Of course some people may have generators but most don't.
Bottle shops will also do well today in Katherine.
It will flood - 48 hours of rain will see to that, whether the core of the weather crosses Katherine or not, the rainfall surrounding the region will cause flooding.
I hope we don't see a repeat of 1998. I worked in RDH then and I remember the massive amounts of goods needed to help Katherine get back on its feet.
You'd be surprised - a client of mine is in Katherine, he just returned from the local Woollies and he says the meat shelves are fairly empty. Pretty silly, unless there's some huge barbecues going on there tonight. Canned goods FTW.
At 5.05 pm the height of the Katherine river at the railway bridge was 16.72 metres and rising. It is expected to peak at 18 metres about 4.00 am on Thursday the 6 th of April.
This may cause some minor flooding in low lying areas, but is not expected to affect most areas of Katherine township, including the Central Business District.
Katherine residents are advised to be prepared in case the situation changes.
The next flood advice will be issued at 10.00 pm Wednesday 5 th April 2006.
For people travelling the Stuart Highway, caution is advised at the King River to the South and the Cullen River to the North.
The river is currently on 18.5 and expected to reach it peak around 19 tommorrow morning all the hospital residents are being evacuated to tindal i been on the bridge just an hour ago and it feels really weird. Hearing it creak an moan. (the bridge was built around 1930's)
At 6.50 am the height of the Katherine River at the railway bridge was 18.35 metres and rising. It is expected to reach18.89 metres by 12.00 midday on Thursday the 6th April. Residents are advised to prepare themselves and be ready to evacuation if the need arises.
The sirens will sound if evacuation is thought necessary. Evacuation Centres are at Katherine High School and MacFarlane Primary School in Grevillia Road and Casuarina Primary School in Casuarina Street.

Meh, during wets 19m was a regular occurrence... Despite what many people seem to believe.
Driving over the bridge with the river an inch or so above the bridge wasn't uncommon either.
Then it flooded... now everyone panics.
EDIT: Should clarify, I'm not saying it won't flood. But since the flood, as soon as it gets to previously normal levels... everyone has a heart attack.
yeah sorry but i lived in katherine for a number of years and the river DID NOT reach above 19m often thats just bull - i saw it go to 18m most wets but not above 19m Especially this time of year...

I said it regularly went to 19m, and it did. Whether it was 19.1 or 18.7. The length of a school ruler can determine whether it was 'record levels' or normal levels. Hell, the markings on the bridge aren't exactly the most accurate measurements possible either...
But, going by those markings the 19m mark was underwater for several years consecutively in the mid-90's, pre-flood.

i lived there during the mid 90's sorry but it didnt hit 19 - its at 18.89m atm and the cbd is already starting to flood sorry dude but u r just wrong in this case

thats true ive seen the max river heights and its only ever gone above like 17.6m twice in the last 50 years, i think water down the main street atm is a good indication of that however if you're reading it straight off the bridge its not the most ideal way as there's a bit of a surge around the pylon
