I think tactical + escort is the way to go for me. The cruisers just lack agility. They have more special powers and such, but I think I enjoyed combat more in my smaller beginner ship than I did in the cruiser; banking around, working on certain shields and maneuvering to open the window for that perfect torpedo opportunity. Very satisfying when it call comes together.
Escorts are good but frustrating at the same time.
Cannons interrupt each other (intended game mechanic) and the only ones worth using have a 45deg firing arc. In the Federation its more of an issue because they generally have lower auxiliary power / agility than Klingon BoP's.
I think you will see a tonne of Engineers too, and very few Tactical Captains. Main reason is that Tactical bonuses are primarily for ground engagement or augmenting ground combat skills :/

Personally I'm going Engineer with Cruisers. I love broadsiding and firing 3 - 4 phaser banks at my enemy
Also if you are going to go the Escort route; make sure you get a nice Turret for your aft section, preferably a disruptor.

oh, i thought the thing with the escorts was that they had more weapons and speed than the cruisers but had less hull hitpoints - but looks like the cruisers get more weapons in the end too?

I think Cruisers technically have more weapon slots; however Escorts have more forward facing slots than any other class; as they arent really designed for broad-siding targets.

They definitely have more maneuverability (holy shit i spelled that word right on my first go) than any other class of ship though.
Im actually pretty torn. I want to fly an Intrepid (science) a Defiant (escort); but also want a massive, hulking hull full of phaser banks (Cruisers)

Refer to my amazing comparison image.

I'm probably going same with the Eng+Cruiser route. The other thing is also what looks like to be that only escorts can get some weapons.

                        Heathen.

I will blow your brother in law if he can somehow get Leonard to record a voicemail greeting for me

Fire it into groups of cruisers (or above) as they are generally slow moving.
I've used it and had some luck firing it into squadrons of fighters, but because they move so fast it's literally hit and miss.

I was playing around with Rapid Fire on my Escort after the latest patch that fixed the ability. My god. 2x Disruptor Cannons and 1x Phaser Cannons with rapid fire and Attack Pattern Alpha = dead enemy in seconds.

Not that I was there, but apparently the end of beta event was a massive invasion of Federation space by the Borg. People were getting creamed by Borg spheres all over the Sol sector, and there was pitched fighting against boarding parties on spacedock. Shame I missed it!
