Over the next few months games will be released that change the industry, that set new standards and break new boundaries. Finally another Broken Sword fan (adventure games forever!)

- Full Throttle
I remember playing this so many time.

- Broken Sword
The first PS game I ever rented from the video store. Damn that stupid goat.

- Suikoden
On a holiday overseas I spent a 5 straight days playing this to perfection. Every character discovered, every single rune or whatsit obtained and single minis or whatever done. Yes it was quite a few years ago now can't forget it EVER.

- SC: BW
Months of very late nights online. Was my true RTS calling.

- Homeworld ( Don't diss the goddamn singleplayer )
The story. Blessed the storywriter is. Before this I never believed a RTS could ever have a story that had any meaning in it.

Ahh stuffit I'll break the rules.

- Red Alert for PS
For about half a year, Friday night was Red Alert night. Neo would cart his PS to my place, use the link cable. And laggy tactics would ensue. One of the early forms we had of some sort of multiplayer RTS

Personally I don't think FF series needs to be put in because everyone knows it's always going to be there somewhere.

well lemon lemmie put it this way. in normal RPG's your given a quest and you go and do it straight away. well...in morrowind you have to ask for directions before you know where to go. and once you kill/steal/cheat something or someone. it/he/she stays dead. so try not to kill anyone important :)

Anyone know what happened with Deus Ex 2 :? Last time I heard about it was at least a year ago.

Post 51

Hmm... i'm dating back a little bit here. I guess whatever entertained me the most.

Final Fantasy 8 on Playstation. Amazing game! I would play it sometimes, and not even eat. Nothing could interrupt me! Minutes were seconds!

Age of Empires. Beautiful game, and my first RTS

Age of Empires II: The Conquerors. First serious online game I played for close to a year.

Counter-Strike. It's what's brought me where I am today :D

Battlefield 1942 & Desert Combat. Nuff said.

The Sims (and all expansions I owned) was a great game too sometimes. Perhaps when I was younger. It doesn't occupy me enough now.

Post 52

Post 58

Okay some games that I have lost too much of my life too

1. Tekken, in all its forms

I have spent too long mastering combos, tactics, frame counting, anti-scrub, 10-hits, traps, poking, turtleing, the tripple EWGF, floats, multi throws and more. And I still could be better at the game, at my height of obsession, I was waking up from dreams where I was playing the game, and my hands were doing the combos.

2. Final Fantasy, in all form

I have finished ALL of them, the first 3 just to say I had, I recomend anyone getting into RPG's to start with these games, they are fan-tas-tic. The biggest jump in quality is from 6 to 7. Number 7 is a masterpiece, great story, great characters, great (for their time) graphics, great music. Just because number 7 is fantastic, it does not mean that the rest arent good, in order of best to worst (IMO) 7-10-8-9-5-6-3-2-1-Mystic Quest. (Mystic Quest is the only one I dont recomend :P)

3. Shenmue/Shenmue 2

Little known RPG that should be MUCH better know, these games are very very good, the story is FANTASTIC, it has love, hope, revenge, loss, betrayal, friendship, humor, and more.... The game is based in Japan/Hong Kong/China (number 3 comes out soon, who knows where that will go :P) in 1987, You play the part of Ryo Hazuki, and in one of the first scenes your Father is murded infront of you, and the story follows your quest to find your fathers killer, and seek your revenge. The game goes into so much realism and detail, they actually got the weather reports in the areas your character is in, and recreate them. The game was made by the amazing Yu Suzuki, who also made the Virtua Fighter series, after burner, and the outrun series. HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMENDED, however only on dreamcast/x-box.

4. Smackdown 1-5

More fun with 3-5 friends cannot be had :P. I have played these through from start to finnish with a bunch of mates, unlocking stuff, shouting, slapping, and screaming as the finishing moves go off :P. The recent one just out changes the system a fair bit, but is still fun, fast and accessible, the 3 things that made the game good in the first place.

5. Diablo 2

Another fantastic game, I have gone on at length about Diablo 2 before, so I am sure you know how I feel about the game, its great fun, but even more so in multiplayer. Once the game is done, you can still spen hours item hunting, building your char, leveling up, remaking with the perfect build, making novelty build chars (try a palladin with a bow) and in the latest patch, TRYING TO MAKE IT PAST HELL, fork that.

So yeah, a bit of a long winded post but eh? what the hell I felt like writing something :P

Post 59

in order (kinda)

1. Counterstrike (duh) + Half-life and other mods
2. Baldur's Gate 1 & 2
3. Rogue Spear 3: Raven Sheild
4. Battlefield 1942 and mods
5. Diablo 2 + Expansion

other stuff i could add
quake 3 + mods
neverwinter nights
unreal tournament + mods and mutators
serious sam
nfs series
aoe 1 & 2

Necro-post for a link to a tear inducing nostalgic article on Broken Sword, who a few of us put in their top 5...

so many people who never post anymore... who the fuck grows up... seriously!

Post 63

Loser adults! :P

Post 64

Lol, just read my epic post, and I would still keep most of my top 5 there :)

Post 65

Yep, despite some amazing games since, mine remain fondly the same.

Post 66

Yeah it's kinda scary that my list hasn't changed since then either.

Post 67

Bf1942
Diablo 2
Age of Empires
Bauldurs Gate 1 and 2
Xcom (enemy unknown and terror from the deep)

Was my list.

Would mostly stay the same.

I play xcom atleast once a year now thanks to steam.
Finally also be able to play Bauldurs gate again thanks to GoG. Still had my original discs but could not get either 1 or 2 or any of the expansion working on windows 7 but thanks to the like of Steam and Good old Games I can play this old game I loved without as much of a hassle.

The old xcom games I don't think anything will beat them off the list while the GFX don't the gameplay still holds up and it still my favourite game of all time.

Baldur's Gate is one of the game that cemented my love of CRPGs and there is no other genre of game that has taken up more of time even if I put MMORPG in a separate category. BioWares' back catalogue is amounts the best in the industry which why I'm likely to forgive them and play The Old Republic anyway.

Age of Empire was my favourite RST but I never did play star craft at the time. Since I think Star Craft 2 has it beat from a competitive fun PoV but now my favourite RTS would have to be the Company of Heroes series. Company of Heroes took a gameplay element from a game that would likely have been on my top 10 in 2003 and improved it. That game was a title called Z by the bitmap brothers.

Diablo 2 still wins out in the action RPG stacks although I found death spank more pure fun it just lacked depth.

BF1942 none of the successors hold up the original and I never was a CS fan.

So that leaves my at.

Bf1942
Diablo 2
Age of Empires Company of Heros
Bauldurs Gate 1 and 2
Xcom (enemy unknown and terror from the deep)

But wait there is one game that was released that I think is one of the best of all time.
Portal. For me it is a toss up between BF1942 and Diablo2 over which would get cut.

Post 68

I only played Broken Sword for the first time when they released the updated version for iOS a few months ago. It's one of those adventure games that got past me somehow back when that genre was still srs bsns. Although I'm only a bit over 1/2 way through I'm really digging it, so much so that I bought all the Broken Sword titles on gog.com a while back for when I eventually finish it and want to move on to the next ones in the series.

Since I never contributed my top 5 games when this thread was fresh I'm going to do it now* and win at life:

X-Com
The Secret of Monkey Island
Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption
Mass Effect 2
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory

* 5 chosen games subject to constant change depending on what mood I'm in when I get asked. Except for X-Com and Mass Effect, that is.

Post 69

List ranking : time spent enjoying gamming.
1. World of Warcraft
2. Halo
3. Starcraft/Warcraft
4. Perfect Dark
5. Mario Brothers

Post 70

haha knew you'd have x-com and monkey island in there, Bam :)

my 5 would be:

marathon
monkey island (the lot, they all count as one to me)
syndicate
dungeon keeper 2
portal

i'd love to add Myst, The Dig, mechwarrior 2, descent freespace 2, mass effect, Rune, Ghost Recon, and Tie Fighter, but i'd play any of the above before any of these

Post 71

Doom (PC)
Wipe out (PS1)

To undermine your metaphorical quote, i will eat it with my face.

And i know what you mean, game quality has being going down lately. especially last year, last year was horrible.

Post 80

These questions are too biased by nostogia to be meaningful.

I mean say you are a Portal fan, and were asked to choose between Portal and Portal 2. Almost all of you would choose Portal because of the fond memories... but go replay it. Portal 2 is a superior game, but Portal will always be number one in most people's hearts because of that revolutionary feeling they got when playing it.

It is reasons like that which would mean games like Portal barely make it in to my Top 5, because as obviously awesome as Portal is, it is competing with the feelings I first had when I played Metroid, or the seven life times I wasted playing original Civ.

Better questions would be:

- Top 5 Gaming Series (then you don't need to choose between Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2)
- Top 5 Gaming Memories

For me:

Top 5 Gaming Series

1) Metroid (except the Team Ninja PoS)
2) Mass Effect
3) Civilisation (Inc. Alpha Centauri, but excluding Call to Power—it can DIAF)
4) Portal
5) Warcraft (Reluctantly inc. World of Warcraft)

Top 5 Gaming Memories

1) First time I played Metroid (original). I remember being blown away by how vast the game was, and playing it on Christmas Eve with my older cousin, getting him to help me with the boss fights.

2) The first time I played Everquest. The epic lowbie Journey from Kelethin to Qeynos. The scale and detail of Everquest blew my mind. I had experienced nothing like it at the time (late 1999).

3) *spoiler* *spoiler* Mass Effect *spoiler* *spoiler* Holy Crap *spoiler* *spoiler* *spoiler* Mass Effect 2 *spoiler* *spoiler* *spoiler* Blew my fucking mind! *spoiler*

4) My first 100+ man raid in Everquest. This was also roughly the time I decided "fuck this shit", but it still blew my mind seeing that many people working together in a virtual world.

5) The ending to Portal.
