Avril Lavigne sucks?

Ummm guys i just heard her today on the radio, her live in concert, oh my god she sounds like a man. And i thought some of her songs were ok. Just goes to show what a recording studio can do :(.

Thats my entire point! You would expect the people at the very elitest of anything to be the best at what they do, but she is really quite bad. It just doesnt seem fair on all the talented hardworking people that could be up there living their dream. As for the consumer who pays for it, well, her CD stuff is very good, but $60 too see her live....No way...after hearing it, i wouldnt play "0.

Anyone who has heard me sing agrees that I have a voice like hacksaws cutting tin. Which is a very terrible sound, if you have ever heard it. Yet... there's this software... which echo's your voice... tweeks the sound... adusts the pitch and volume, does all that... I sang into it, completely out of tune and squeaking... the voice that came out sounded like someone from a boyband. A bit crapper, and not really 'human', but still it sounded almost like an actual singing voice. I was creeped out.

Talent means little these days. Many people can't tell the difference between edited sound and natural sound.

it could also mean the pa guy was crap. but if it was more than one concert they can't get it wrong all the time.

Do not bag Avril, her concert rocked. I was front row, if she was in inch shorter then I would have been able to grab her tie.

Todays music culture, in general is shit. Very few singer/bands/groups that come out these days actually have that stuff, known as tallent. Just play some shit into a mic, use some software and play around with it, add a bit of media attention and you've got yourself a chart topping song. Shame :(

I saw her on Rowe live tonight, and I was reminded of this thread.

You know what I got from her preformance? She looked terrified. I reckon she has stage fright... even stepping out to talk to Rowe after the song, her body language was extremely defensive... she looked absolutely terrified throughout the whole time. That said, she was absolutely aweful to listen to; I have a very fine musical ear, and while I have very limited musical talent myself, I can really tell even very subtle manipulations in tone; I wasn't the only one who winced when she struck an off chord, and just seemed... extremely flat.

Her music, her face, her hair... seemed extremely synthetic, unlike her recorded tracks, which are lively and vibrant... and I say again, I really think she has stage fright or something.

I feel really sorry for her now.

Ok ok, listen up doggs - Avril is a, how do u say - highly controversial character. From a commercial point of view, she fucking sells boys - not matter how much u wanna bag her, their's always gonna be some lil wannabe skater girl out their buying her cd's - not to mention the blokes that are too embarassed they listen to it as well as buy it. We just got an order received last week of about 30 of the limited edition of her new cd, some bonues crap to scam some more kids - but it's working. hell, she's even got her a guitar in her hand onna front cover. I used to fucking biatch and whine continuously about how solo artists like avril, madonna, kylie, etc. style artists [not necessarily female, thats just ironic] would simply not give credit to the band. Sure avril sings well, and look dudes - she does ok? Studios can only improve <-----> that much, i work with it, i fuckin utilize it, and i mix with studios. You seriously cannot afford to improve to the point where they sound unbelievably good, it's just not a smart move. Cause when they wanna go live, u get peeps jumping up and down complaining about the poor sounds.

Bands like Dollar short, bodyjar, 28 days, UL, blink - etc [my fav. lineup - coincidence? i think not... :D] were made for live shows. christ, it's the only way you get publicity - and then a label. IT IS FUCKING HARD TO SCORE A RECORD COMPANY. So they get a shiteload of performances, and lemme tell you - fuckups - up their sleeves before they go hardcore live. But with the avril style scenario, she's only fresh meat. Give her a chance. I wouldnt pay to see her, but if i was a fan - i wouldn't care if she sounded good. I'd go because i wanted to. Shit man, even if i have to pay for Bass inna Grass - i will, but only for 28 days. Machine gun sounds goin down these days, the rest are all bogan bands/artists cause the nT gov is broke and can't afford better. Even if i go and 28 days sounds incredibly, totally terrible - i will not give a stuff. i think they are freakin mad, and i support bands like that regardless of how they sound live. Have you heard Buddah/CHeshire cat by the blink boys? it sounds terrible! the recording is shoddy, the vocals sound like tom and marks balls reach the ceiling - and scott drowns out he guitar. But i didnt care, i bought it.

Actualyl she has quite a talented voice and I'm not sure if you people realise how hard it is to do what she has done. I don't personally like her because she isn't a performer, e.g. remember her performance on rove live where she just stood still and sung. She has a great voice and don't give her shit when you don't have much of a musical back round and you barely know how to sing your self.

i'm no musical genius myself (unless 'in the jungle' performed on recorder counts), but i can generally tell when someone sings like a pig on heat. my ears don't take too kindly to that sort of thing ;). her saving grace is that she used a program to touch up her voice so it doesn't sound so crap, whereas Ja Rule unleashed it upon us in all its demented mediocrity.

Dude she fucing sings in harmony meaning she doesn't sing on the root note giving it a different feel. SHe sings on notes from the chord or triad it's just different and as I was saying before, you clearly don't have enough musical knowledge to tell the difference between a shit singer and a talented boring one.

frankly i don't give a shit if she sings out of her arse. i know it sounds like crap, and that the only reason she sounds half decent on CD is because she retouches it in a recording studio. from the point of view of a consumer i don't have to know the intricacies of the way she sings, and i don't give a f*ck. there are no prerequisites for knowing what i like, and what appeals to my ear, and therefore there are no excuses for sounding like crap.

I have a very sensitive ear for tones. Avril's preformance on Rowe Live... actually made me wince at one occasion. And I wasn't the only one.

I'm not gonna bitch about her voice because there's alot of band out there with retards for lead vocalists, and I'm not gonna bitch about her live shows because lots of bands have bad live shows, (anyone see The Vines @ Gold Coast Big Day Out? They were rediculously bad) but my problem with her is the way she calls herself a punk. If she just admitted to being a pop singer than she wouldn't have the huge 'Anti-Avril' society paying her out, but then again she probably wouldn't have the huge following of 12yr old girls who think they're 'punk rawkers' for listening to her :lol: But anyway I can put up with crap singers/bands and I can put up with crap live shows but I really hate it when people put on a fake image to make money.

i never said she was the worst singer ever, only that she has a lack of talent. she is making money because she is 1) a pop-princess turned wannabe punker and 2) she does what most pop artists do and retouches her voice using editing software. these are points that have already been established throughout the course of this thread. you are entitled to your own opinion just like the rest of us, although some of us choose to make our points without using aggression.

Actually the main way that singer performances are improved is not some kind of super-secret maaaaagical software. It's editing.

They put Avril or whoever in a studio for a few months, and every day she sings her songs a dozen times. And then after that sound technicians come in an patiently snip out the best bits from every single effort, and stitch them back together.

Expensive, and boring, but obviously effective.

Exodus, i know a thing or two about music, and im sure you do too. Most people, including ones who have discussed on this thread do too. I dont think that Avril was singing 'harmony' because there is no such thing as a harmony 1/2 note flat of the original, thats just called 'bad singing'. But even if at times, she was harmonizing, that would produce a song with no melody, and what does that leave the song with? People sing along with melodies, not harmony.

Don't you realise that 90% of modern music is designed to please your eyes, not your ears. Most of it is just cookie cutter songs with no real emotional connection from the "artists" (using that term very loosely) and a pretty face and nice arse slapped on the cover. If they says its cool then people think it is, but without their hot appearance (cos who who wouldn't do em) the media attention (that comes from said hot appearance) and music videos reinforcing the gorgeousness of them all we would not so easily accept what they call music. Our standards would be a lot higher. Are there any ugly girls out there that have nice voices and/or musical talent. If you believe Rage or VH1, apparently not.
