ID:	597009Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad, "the leading tactical multiplayer WWII shooter", is now out - ready for download and play on Steam. We've seen mixed opinions from GU readers about the quality of the game during its beta period, mostly negative. But I'm sure we'll see many of you online shooting face this evening anyway!

"Experience the brutal Battle of Stalingrad and the surrounding operations from the quick, vicious firefights to more intricate and challenging tactical missions. With inventive features and streamlined realism Red Orchestra 2 delivers unrivalled accuracy and attention to detail, along with gritty, vicious combat in multiplayer and single-player modes."

yeah, SHP, i was in the beta too, and i didn't try the last part of the beta because I was fairly unhappy with the initial beta. I *will* be trying the game itself when I get a chance though - we all know betas aren't a good indicator. I felt there was probably a good game there somewhere, but I couldn't find it in that initial play.

My BETA impressions were that it felt very clunky - like I was controlling my character with a radio control while watching him through a CCTV system. Lag was a pretty big issue (often is here though due to our telecoms believing the city i'm in is a suburb of a city 2,500+ kms away). The cover system was dismal, and i frequently found myself trapped on geometry - particularly when trying to disengage from cover. Weird things where some cover items SHOULD protect you but don't and others where an item looks like it should expose most of you but provides full protection.

I was happy to note that while others were experiencing CTDs, I didn't.

the graphics have been talked about elsewhere, and while they SHOULD be (and clearly are) secondary to gameplay, it's still a bit of a disappointment to see a game released this decade that looks like it borrowed all of its visual resources from Return to Castle Wolfenstein (2001).

audio stuff was cool, tho i can't comment on overall sound quality (i'm just not that sort of guy), I liked the little touches like team mates saying they're scared or man down when they see a downed comrade etc.

the weapons felt like utter crap - but beta so yeah, that shit can be tuned and lag may've been part of the issue.

the odd thing with different coloured names got me - and that may just be the newbie in me - but it's fucking stupid to go against established norms of "enemies have red names, my team has coloured names" - mixing colours in the same team is dumb unless they're shades of the same colour, or evoke the same effect (see Battlefield Bad Company 2 squads vs teammates colouring for how this SHOULD be done if it must be). red vs green on same team - not smart.

Well mostly performance issues at the moment. Servers crash and lag- could be server hardware.

The cover system is clunky and the god dam keybindings gahhhh

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive was just updated again, making a number of changes and additions to the game. The default map has been switched from Inferno to Train, which appears to be a far better recreation than Inferno, apart from the fog issue. There are also a bunch of new weapons: the Para, the TEC-9 Pistol, the SG 552 (pictured), and the AUG....

  • Counter-Strike: Global Offensive beta impressions
    by rec
I've been shooting some face in the CS:GO beta for the first time this evening, and there's quite a bit to talk about. I should preface this impressions article with the note that while I used to play at a national level, it has been years since I've delved into any CS in any serious capacity. I'm sure there will be a number of current day elitists out there who disagree with my opinions, but I'm not claiming this as gospel, so append as much or as little weight to these opinions as you care to....
