Talking with IndustryGamers, the respected Ultima creator said "I think we might get one more generation, might, but I think fundamentally they're doomed." Considering rising competition from devices such as tablets he explains that "I think fundamentally the power that you can carry with you in a portable is really swamping what we've thought of as a console."

A solitary example is tradies. You would almost NEVER see tradies building PCs to game on. Now they make up a strong contingent of console gamers.
But the big difference is it's much more social. Nobody really plays LANs anymore - but not just because of internet play - but because you can have 3 mates come over and you can all just play on the one machine. There doesn't have to be three computers dragged along.
Xbox with a few mates in front of the telly is the new LAN.
