• 'Gaming causes more harm than smoking'

The public consultation period for the heated R18+ classification debate is over. Thousands of note-worthy submissions have been made, including a 17 page demolition of the South Australian Attorney General, Michael Atkinson, by Paul Hunt - formerly Deputy Director of Australia's Classification Board.

It's a shame then, with such intelligent and credible support for the tightening of classifications, that a flurry of mindless press continues to corrupt public opinion with scare-tactics and outrageous hyperbole...

This evening, Ten News ran a story claiming that "the link between violent video games and youth crime is greater than the connection between smoking and lung cancer." This ludicrous comparison is a reminder of Atkinson's; that gamers are more dangerous than biker gangs.

The report warns parents that stabbings and other violent crimes are directly linked to games such as Modern Warfare 2. Games like Infinity Ward's stellar success "actually rewire a child's brain making them more amenable to violence," Matt Doran reports.

Bull crap, it's the modern parenting that's at fault.

Bets are most of those violent crimes are committed by people who have spent more time sharpening their knives than playing video games.

Also Paul Hunt, do you want more babies? Because Lenko will have them for you!

Its all crap... John Burmby is thinking he will be voted out this election and that has changed the "Alcohol is fueling violence" to "We need to do something about the knife attacked". Vic police have had enough of him and are putting out contradictory statements about the issues and he's wanting to be seen as labour has done something towards the alcohol issue.

and "the link between violent video games and youth crime is greater than the connection between smoking and lung cancer" I find is just insulting. Youth crime is a clear multifacet issue, I'd put number 1 down to bad parenting and number 2 theres just more wankers in certain areas of the city. ie King street Melbourne, where throughout its history has always been a danger zone at night... theres a stabbing neally every week and a death neally every year on Kings street, computer games didnt change this, and its not youths, its 21+ year olds.......

Just gonna throw it out there, it's got a MW2 has a MA15+ rating. So no child really could technically play it so it cant rewire there brain.

Go back home you Nancy Socialist fuck!

looking at my paycheck i would beg to differ that the government doesn't get any money from me In all seriousness though, I agree that a lot of the issues we have with society now are due to bad parenting.

Alcohol a 'recurring theme' in youth violence - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

      [b]Alcohol a 'recurring theme' in youth violence[b/]

The chair of a long-running Federal Government inquiry into youth violence says she is starting to see a recurring connection between alcohol and aggression.

The Member for Canberra, Annette Ellis, has been guiding the inquiry since last June.

She says the link between alcohol and violence in young people has been made in many of the submissions.

"It is a recurring theme, but I don't want to mislead anybody by giving the impression that that's all that's being talked about," Ms Ellis said.

"Family breakdown, domestic violence, sometimes mental health, a whole range of other reasons and issues come into play if we try to discuss where violence comes from in our younger community."

Ms Ellis says she expects the inquiry's full report will be tabled in June.
